Linux on a 200MHz PC

I wanted to install one of the latest versions of either Mandrake or Suse Linux on an old 200Mhz 32MB RAM 2.1GB HD Computer but it seems that the system requirements for those versions are way higher than that.

Is there any easy to install, user friendly, with a good GUI, Linux OS that will run on that computer? I just need it to be able to run the browser and a couple of small apps.

Basically, no. All of the gui's that seem to be considered "good" are huge and bloated and will annihilate that poor p200

"User friendly" also seems to equate to bloat.

You could try knoppix and (I forget how) start it up running fluxbox or window maker or whatever lightweight wm it has. It isn't super duper user friendly depending on your needs/wants, but the install is either easy or nonexistant, and it should run fine (with a browser and other common apps).

RedHat 6.2's performance for me was minimally acceptable on a P200. That is using the GUI and everything.

clicknext, how much ram did you have on that 200MHz PC?

I am looking at knoppix now, seems interesting. So i can just put the CD in the tray and run Linux right away without any needs for partitions etc?

64MB of RAM makes a big difference over 32MB of RAM for an application like that.

Well if you wanted to run it on the 200mhz its not hard..

just pass the options to the kernel.
like
knoppix desktop=fluxbox exc...

Although you can run it on a windows pc easy.. It will even read your ntfs partitions automatically. There is no write support for ntfs partions though. Support for fat32 partions r/w should be avalible. I am not sure though.

The version of RH has nothing to do with it, RH 9 will run fine as long as you don't use Gnome or KDE.

But the gnome and KDE in 6.2 will run better than the gnome in KDE in 9.

I definitely wouldn't recommend running anything that old though.

A little 200 would be great for linux. You won't be able to use it as a multimedia box by anymeans, but it would be usefull for a lot of things.

Namely as a kinda nock-around box. You hear about some sort of service like ntp (network time protocal) your kinda interested in. (you would use ntp to syncronise all your PCs in a network, it is kinda important if you do alot of file sharing, because then you would have accurate time stamps and head off some problems that can happen. Also good for buggy x86 hardware that has a different amount of time dift each time you reboot. It's not the coolest example) So you fire it up and putz around with it for awhile. You don't have to worry about frying anything like on your main desktop. You know play around with it edit config files with a axe and sees what happens, intentionally try to crash it, etc etc etc.

Once you get bored with it, just plop a medium sized HD into it and use it for backups, also would be good for a place to upload files and music for when you need to reformat your main machine. Think about it like a big cheap external HD you can mount as just another partition thru nfs or smb (network file sharing (unix stuff) and windows file sharing) Stick a cheap cd burner in it for more backups, or music cds whatever.

I use a old 486-based compac proliant with some old 1.3 gig scsi drives in it for that purpose. Since I got my nice big hd for my desktop 1.3 seems pretty small now, but still it'll take anything that my other 2 computers can thow at it without even flinching.

Of course if you can get a some more memory stuck in that machine the more better off you'll be.

I used to use an old version of Mandrake (5.3 I think) with KDE 1.x on an IDT Winchip 225mhz w/ 32mb of RAM. It seemed to work fine back then. If you load up an old version of KDE or a new version of Windowmaker (or Fluxbox if you must ) then you should be able to get by. Heck until very recently on of the CompSci labs on campus was running a bunch of 33mhz Sparc's running Solaris and FVWM. Now a 33mhz SPARC is a lot faster than a 33mhz x86, but it still ain't smokin either. Those did just fine (they finally swapped up to Blade workstations this year gone). You'd be surprised what older hardware can do mated with proper software. Afterall, people were still using Linux with GUI's back when that hardware was top of the line .

Run twm or something on it. I knew a guy that spent $1500 building a 200MHz Linux box back when the 233's came out.

s**t! I spent something like 400 dollars to peice together my 1.13 ghz machine using a old sony 400mhz computer a couple years ago. (of course its a continual upgrade, so I added a modern hd, another 256megs of ram, and a cd-burner since then)

that is totally correct. knoppix will write to a FAT32 partitioned drive without a problem. if it could only do it to a NTFS drive, that would be awesome...........

Email Microsoft, get them to open up the documentation to NTFS, otherwise we just have to wait while the developers reverse engineer it.
