Linux Partitions

I am trying to set up my computer to run RedHat Linux 7, but I've been incountering problems because I really have no idea what I'm doing. Here is my situation. I have a 30 GB hard drive split up into 2 partitions. The first (C is 20 GB and holds Windows '98 SE and all my files. The second partition (Dis 10GB and is completely empty. So what do I need to do in order to make room for the 3 Linux partitions I need to make? I would like to use the empty space on the D drive and keep as much space in tact on the C drive as possible. I do have partition magic 5 if that is of any help. Thanks in advance!

All you really need to do is delete the D: drive. Partition Magic can do it or you *should* be able to do it during the Linux install. Just put the RH CD in the drive when you boot and follw the steps.

It may be just a little easier to start with two partitions for Linux. The roo partition, denoted by '/', will be the largest. The other partition, for swap, Only needs to be about 100MB.

Doesn't he also have to place the root linux partition within the space below the 8Gb?

With RH7, I'm not sure that the 8GB/1024-cylinder issue applies anymore. Reports on LILO now say that the later versions are no longer subject to this "problem." This version, I've heard, was included with Mandrake 7.1, which has been out a few months. I can only assume that the same version (or later) made its way into RH7.

I have *NEVER* tried this new version of LILO beyond the 8GTB/1024th cylinder.
