Greetings, I have a question regarding the Linux SETI client. I have recently installed Red Hat 9 on one of my machines. I am new to Linux so bare with me lol. I am looking to run SETI on this but I am not sure what the bet set up is. I am running the CLI version with SEIT Driver and SETI Spy on all my Windoze boxes. Can anyone give me some info on the best set up . I will probably be running WINE at some point too so not sure if it better to run the Windoze CLI through WINE. Any info would be apprecieated.
Thanks.

It has been found that running the Windows CLI in WINE is best for peformance, even better than the native Linux client!!

I also need to run a Linux client... I use this server for email only, so it does not even have an X server on it... I assume you need an X server to run WINE...

So, what is the 2nd best way to run a client on linux, and is there a script that will auto-run if the box is rebooted (manually of course as the box never fails on its own!)

How many folks do we have running a linux box/linux client?

Any assistance would be appreciated.

i run it on one of my slower machines. I just open up and consol and type in ./setiathome -verbose -proxy urlort

You do not need the proxy command if you are not using seti q or something of the like.

I'm not 100% sure how the Linux client would compare to what i'm using on FreeBSD, but if it's anything alike, it's a really simple process. I just run:
./setiathome -proxy 192.168.0.123:5500 &

This sets the client running in the background, at which point I just forget about it. Not sure about how to make it start back up either since I never have a reason to shut down or reboot that machine. I would imagine it would be done in those 'rc' files or something like that. I'm still wet behind the ears when it comes to *nix, can ya tell? =)

On a side note, my BSD box is dedicated to only crunching, but I noticed you use your server for other purposes as well. You my need to research the 'nice' command (man nice) to make sure the seti app gives up cpu cycle to anything mission critical such as your mail services, etc.

I appreciate your responses guys. I will download the linux client and see how it goes.

I can put the command into my rc.local file, i would guess. lemme try that.

Thanks.

JTA, I run 2 of them. I don't use the X server either...
On my 733mhz box, I run Red Hat 73, running the Linux Client in tty3, accessed by pressing the alt-F3 buttons. This is
some sort of virtual window. CD to your Seti dir, and do the ./setiathome ect..ect.. command.
Now press alt-F1 and now your back to tty1, or where you originally started. You can run your
mail server in this VT(Virtual Terminal) and swap back and forth to check Seti.
From tty1, CD to your Seti dir, and issue the "more state.sah" command. The percent complete will
be about 10 lines or so from the top of the display expressed in decimal. .15 for 15% and so on...

I also have a dual 933 mhz PIII box that has RedHat 8.0 on it. I run Seti on tty1 and tty2, from different
directories. Seti1 and Seti2. Both instances use about 99 percent of their respective processors and I
can check on their process by CD/Seti1, then more state.sah...hehe do it a few times and it will become
old hat.

Good Luck,
and I hope this helped.
Any more questions, just ask.

Thanks for the help hay, i think I have it working, for now... I did put the commadns to run 2 processes (in different directories) into my rc.local file, to kick them off when the box restarts.

I should probaby test that to make sure it works... Also, I wonder what kind of performance hit I will take running 2 processes... This box handles about 1400 pieces of spam, er, I mean Mail per day... thats all it does (oh, and a little DNS work)... so I dont think it will 'hurt it' in any way to run seti on it. (yes, it is my own box, i give myself permission)

Is there a way to tell how many WUs this machine has done? will that be listed in the state file as well?

Thanks,

jta-seti

To find out how many total units you have done, not just on this machine, check the
user_info.sah file. It shows the total results returned. Is your machine a dually?
Or just a dual-channel/HT machine?

Oh, yea, the best command I have found to check how much processor percent
each process is using is the "top" command. Just type in "top" and you will
see a screen that updates about every 3 seconds telling you the processes
running on your machine and their approx. cpu usage. Just press the letter
"q" to quit.

The only way to tell how many WU's a single machine has done, is to use a seti queue.
the one that I use is "dns2go.smokeball.com:5517". Just send Smoke a PM and let him
know that you would like to utilize his queue and he should let ya. If your machine
has a unique name, Smoke can show you how to look at the stats for that machine.

Hay..

Ok, thanks for all the info. I see my stats rising, and my position.. it is quite exciting.

I will post later with my experience setting up client on linux.

Well, I've had fun learning Linux. I even compiled my own Kernel!
I needed a restricted Kernel for a Ham Radio project and didn't want
anything that I didn't absolutely need. I did this on my RedHat 7.3 boxen.

I have also learned alot from guys right here on the TeAm! !
