Linux (slackware) black printer *edit* black cartridge, not a black coloured printer!!

Hi

I'm looking for a printer that runs well under linux (slackware 8.0) that doesn't have big install headaches. I really only want it for printing text, so it needn't be high spec. I would like it to print out pages pretty quick in black, though.

I know some may say this belongs in hardware but as it's linux specific I've gone for the OS forum to make sure more penguin lovers see it

Lexmark E310/E312 laser.. (I have a 312) best printer I ever bought since my ORIGNAL HP Deskjet back in 86...

Its a fully Postscript Level 2 printer with up to 1200dpi (600 E310), and takes a standard SIMM for memory in the back.. (I put a 64MB EDO in mine).. I use mine via USB connection to my Redhat box which works flawlessly and was detected automatically.

Being postscript level 2 its PERFECT for Linux... all native printing, and just about every computer and os on the planet will support postscript.. I wish EVERY printer was a postscript printer myself..

And best of all.. its only about $300-350. ... which is a GREAT price for a FULL POSTSCRIPT printer.


BTW, avoid the E312L, its not postscript..

I use an hp 932 under slack 8 using the gimp-print drivers and cups printing system.

Epsons seem the be the best open source printers right now.

Thanks for the links. That looks like one hell of a printer. You also put me onto the linux compatible printer list, which is very helpful....

The E312 seems excellent. Small footprint too. However, I am on a tight budget! I'm trying to track down some E310s which may be a little cheaper.

Anyone else have any suggestions to help me along??
