linux: which ftp server?

I am at the site and they are saying that they won't be updating it anymore or anything.. ?
which ftp server do I use?

I thought that proFTPd was insecure? I know that there is an ftp server that is though, and I thought that was it. I thought I read a lot of people say that only sftp is secure. I'm going for security here ..

ProFTP, run wu if you like applying patches frequently or enjoy the excitment of having an intrusion at any time!

Edit: just to clarify how are you talking about secure? Standard ftp will send your password in cleartext just like telnet. If you're using a secure ftp server than we're talking a different animal in most cases. I still hate wu

I agree on ProFTPd.

There's a SecureFTP server that comes with OpenSSH 3.x, considdering the general quality of everything the OpenBSD project makes, I must say I'd put quite a bit of faith into that one.

Forget ftp unless OpenSSH's ftp server will fit the bill. Just use scp

sftp is an entirely different protocol. You need an sftp client to connect to an sftp server. It is all encrypted via SSH. Both OpenSSH and SSH come with a version of sftp.

There are a couple of Windows ftp programs that work with sftp (or atleast say they do), and the Windows port of OpenSSH should have the sftp client.

Well.. I guess that I have to go with proFTPd ... I can't expect everyone to have an ssh enabled ftp client.
Although, that should be the standard

mandrake uses proftpd, which is gaining in popularity largely because of how buggy wu has proven to be time and time again.

the sftp included in openssh is secure and reliable, but as you said you don't expect everyone to have ssh installed (might this be a good time to force them to?) when talking about ftp described in the RFC's, there is no such thing as a secure client because of the clear text transmission of passwords.

wu makes it just a little easier to exploit the host. proftpd will take a little more time is all.

lilcam, i'm 99% sure you are wrong. mandrake doesn't use wu (although i believe it is provided on the cds). i think redhat installs wu by default though
