I am planning to give Linux a try, Lindows to be exact.

Mostly what i have in mind is:
-Photoshop
-NFS: Undergrouns
-STEAM
-TMPGenc

In general it's a bad idea to try to get windows programs to run in Linux, sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't but 9 times out of 10 you're better off finding a native Linux version. This is only a real pain when it comes to games.

Depending on what you do with Photoshop and TMPGenc you might be able to get by with The GIMP and mencoder/transcode, respectively. I have no idea what STEAM is and for NFS you'll need WINE or WINEX, like n0c said.

Subscribe to Transgaming.com if you want to play games. It's amazing what they have got to work. Lindows has mostly given up trying to get Windows apps to work, they are putting effort into developing native apps. They do have some emulation solutions and ported games available though, but they are not free. They offer a program that runs Office on Lindows, if you are interested in that sort of thing.

I've gotten half life to work in linux via wine, and steam runs fine, but it won't run CS at all. People have gotten it working though.

If you want games you have to check out winex. If you games don't have 4 or 5 start support it can be a pain in the but. CS should work, but some mods won't.

Many games that have directx requirements only realy use it menus and start up stuff, lots use opengl for the actual games itself. Those games tend to run well, directx games tend to have a bigger performance penalty.

I've used it to run warcraft 3, black&white, diablo 2, and couple other games and they worked well. transgaming website

But it does cost at least 15 bucks IIRC. They have a subscription system were you subscribe to it and then you get all the updates and access to their forums and the ability to vote on future support of games and stuff.
