Here is the website for those not familiar with it and some screenshots

http://www.linuxmce.org

And here is a demo video of it in action with a Gyration Remote control (which is amazing)

Here is a comparison video with WindowsMCE

Anyway - my question is. Is anyone currently using it and does any Gyration Remote work with it? Anyone with any experience with it please post and let me know what you think.

Does anyone know if there is any advantage to getting a Hauppauge 1800 (PCI Express instead of PCI)? The only difference would be the speed of communication right? And PCI is fast enough?

I set up my own LinuxMCE box last year and it was an interesting experience. The only problem is that it was (and I believe still is) constantly being developed so it might be buggy. But I loved my LinuxMCE box anyway.

Gyration did not have the remote/mouse you posted last year so I was upset that I had to settle with only the mouse. But yeah that remote/mouse should work just fine.

It appears that both cards have dual tuners and have onboard MPEG2 encoders. If it only comes down to PCI or PCIE then just get whichever works for your motherboard. Both Hauppauge cards only capture in MPEG2 and PCI can handle that.

How was it setting up the Gyration mouse on linux? I'm running an Ubuntu 'media extender' box and am really getting tired using a standard mouse.

Excellent support in linux. The biggest downside, for me, is that the mouse infrared. Other than that I love it.

edit: once you plug in the dongle its like plugging in a normal usb mouse in linux (but it uses a different driver) so it automatically works.
