Does anyone else have problems with Lion, clamshell mode, and a larger external monitor?

I finally got my monitor to work with Tunderbolt via HDMI and I am noticing how bad Lion is with window management. Since the monitor is 1080p and my Airs is a diff. res the window position is all weird. When I unplug my monitor and take my laptop somewhere else all the windows are different sizes and in the wrong position.

Is OS X not capable of remembering window position on each monitor and scale accordingly? Is there a solution at all to this by chance?

Do other OSes actually scale the windows assuming similar/idential aspect ratios?

If I hook my Air up to my 1080p monitor when I unplug it will snap everything back to the Air at the size closest to what it was on the monitor. But it doesn't scale per se. So, if a window was full height but only 600px wide, then it will still be full height and 600px wide instead of like 400px wide.

I haven't notice OS X any worse with that sort of thing than any other OS I have used. But I haven't used Linux extensively (read: barely at all), so maybe some distro has some feature that does that.

I'm not speaking from experience but I think Windows handles it better. The real issue is things like Safari are being moved half way OFF the screen after the monitor is unplugged and the lid is opened. So you have to drag and resize windows every time. It's getting very frustrating.
