Liquor Legalities

My Dad and I walk into the liquor store today, me being 20 and my dad 52. We walked to the freezer and got two cases of Smirnoff ice for a cookout we're going to. We each carried a box since they are kinda bulky.
Attendant: I need to see your ID
Dad: He's not buying anything
Attendant: I still need to see it
Dad: He's under 21
Attendant: I can't sell you anyhting then. *Walk out*

Now is this really the way it is in CT? I've been going in and out of liquor stores all my life and never had a problem helping carry stuff. But according to state law, my father can still give me a beer as long as im 16 or over. Anyone know the legalities or had experiences in this sort of thing?

I've had that happen before. I was with my mom (I'm 23), and was carrying some beer for her to the checkout at Wal-Mart and they asked to see my ID. I didn't have it on me but my mom managed to convince her to sell to us anyway haha.

I've never had that happen, but here in Indy they couldn't care any less about crap like that.

In AZ this happens too. I've checked out at a grocery store behind my older friends and they wanted to see my ID for their liquor products. "I'm not buying any liquor," I protested.

I had to leave the store, and my friends had to go to a different cashier to buy the liquor. Ever since then, until we all turned 21, people buying liquor would have zero contact with the underaged friends in the store itself.

It's absolute nonsense

She basically said "that's a retarded policy."

The store owner was probably arrested for selling to minors once before, so he isn't taking anymore chances.

It happened to me and my younger brother (over 21, but forgot his ID)....
They refused a sale....Said that since he touched the crate he was a part of the transaction and would have to show the ID... OK we walk out...

I come back alone 2 min later and they still refuse to sell it :| (I would have gone to a different place but my car had broken down and this was the only place within walking distance)....

In Ohio you cannot buy alcohol if you're 21, but your license says "Under 21 until XX/XX/XX." Yay Ohio! Fvcking retards run this state.

Technically, bringing the item up to the register is an attempted sale-- even if someone else (in this case, the father) is paying.

In some places, even an underage cashier is not allowed to touch the alcohol (they have to call over a manager to move it from checkout stand into a grocery bag).

My brother's wife once went in to get a lighter, since we were having a BBQ that evening. The cashier refused to sell it to her because she "saw a kid in the car" and said "the law says" they can't sell cigarettes/Skoal/matches/alcohol to someone if they see a minor in the vehicle. I'm sure that was some backwoods thing to prevent kids getting their older friends to buy them cigs/ber, but FFS! :disgust:

I'm glad we left that small town.

????

What am I missing that's obvious? I don't understand why having your license say "Under 21 until XX/XX/XX" is retarded (unless, of course, it literally say XX/XX/XX).

It happened to me, my gf, and her sister about a week ago. Technically, even if his father carried it to the counter, they wouldn't sell it to him because you (being under the legal age) were with him in the store. In my situation, my gf and myself had no plans to consume the alcohol but the mere fact that we were with her at the checkout meant that we all needed to be carded.

It's retarded because you can BE 21 and yet not be allowed to buy alcohol if your license says that. I.E. two weeks ago when I was 22 my license said "Under 21 until 5/15/2005" and yet I could not buy alcohol in this damn state. So I had to go spend an hour and pay $19.50 to get a license to replace a completely valid license that wasn't going to expire until 2009.

Sounds more like a stupid cashier than a State Government issue. *shrug*

Thats funny because when I was in Indy for a bowling tournament 3 of us went into the liquor store and my friend that just bought snacks got carded...even though he wasn't buying alcohol, you must be 21 to enter the store.

So the fact that some person working the counter at a grocery store is an idiot and couldn't see that you were indeed 21 (since the date would be after the date specificed on your ID card), that is somehow proof that the State of Ohio is run by retards????

I think what he is saying is that people who are turning 21 still have the "minor" version of the license for a while (until their next renewal date). That license has a big "Under 21 until" label on it, and nobody will sell him alcohol because they assume he is under 21. They are too lazy to look at the "until XX/XX/XX" part to determine if he is 21 yet.

EDIT: Too slow...

IT'S RETARDED. CHANGE THE DRINKING AGE TO 18. EVERYONE ELSE HAS DONE IT ALREADY.

more seriously, there are other nations with legal age over 18. most do not seem to enforce the legal age.

They're just following the law... at a lot of these places they have "secret shoppers" that will try things like this to see if the clerk sells it or not, they can be fined heavily

Nope, it's apparently a state law. I tried to buy beer right after I turned 21 and had the problem, but didn't really worry about it because I went to school out of state and my license was fine there. But I tried at a Reds game and then called a couple bars in the Cincy area and none of them would take my license.
