Can anyone confirm whether the nV Silencer 5 fits on the 8800GT? I've heard that rev. 2 does...I have one of those suckers on a 6800GT that doesn't really get used any more (it's in my other computer but I don't ever game on that one, so I can always uninstall it and replace the 6800GT w/ a cheapo AGP card)

The mounting holes are the same so it'll bolt on, but wheather the memory pads will line up or any of the components will hit the area under the fan is anyones guess.
Personally i wouldnt bother with the nv5, i had it on my 7900gt and x1900xtx and it barely cooled better then stock. It was quiet but thats it.
Invest in the accelero s1 and some good adhesive tape as the one on the ramsinks sucks.

well, where as the 8800gt idled at around 50C for me on the stock hsf, with the S1 and fan module, i'm sittin at 36C. i can't wait to see what it does under load. wish i had some way to stress it and monitor at the same time.

oh, and i've got a question. it says when installing the fans to plug the 3 pin wire into the mobo. the only open plug i found was called pwr_fan i think. is there anyway i can control the fan of will mobo do it? like if i wanna ramp it up before starting a game.

or can i just plug in into the card where the stock fan went?

The S1 isn't an option for me because of the way it extends past the top of the card. I have a Lian-Li case that has the side fan and it already almost comes into contact with my video card as it is now.

Edit: just ordered a Zalman VF1000, AS5 thermal paste, and a few additional heatsinks from NCIX for less than $65 including shipping

Just to add to the discussion. With my stock cooling on my GT I was getting 50c idle and up to 90c loaded. I replaced the stock setup today with an S1 and a Minebea 120mm fan and I am idling at 30c and I have been running RTHDRIBL for about 20 minutes I haven't broke 42c yet. My room is about 20c and I'm using Expertool to monitor temps. Now to OC this thing.

Wow, FedEx is reporting that my Zalman cooler is at my doorstep waiting for me...I didn't use any kind of express shipping. Nice one, NCIX!

anyone know if the accelero s1 fits into a CM 690 case with a 120mm fan on the side panel?

Zalman VF1000 installed w/ Arctic Silver 5 thermal paste! Load temps tested running ATITool, but didn't run for an obscenely long time, just ran for long enough that I didn't see temperatures go any higher for a few minutes

Old idle: ~53 C
Old load: ~90 C

New idle: ~38 C
New load: ~52 C

Nice.

I'm weighing in late on this but:

I also have major pro blems with my 8800GT SSC - I have it in the RMA procsess and for the time being had to underclock it and crank the fan up to 80% when playing 3d GAMES.

It seems there are quite a few defective cards in this series. I was told the DUAL orb cooler would work well on it.

well, with my S1, it never got over 51C playing the crysis demo. sure it didn't get stressed to 100%, but no game should stress it any worse than that.

and acolyte, it fits in my CM 330, so im sure it will in the 690. i have an old 80mm fan on the side panel, no probs.

HardOCP just reviewed a bunch of coolers on an 8800GT, both stock and overclocked. They even tried ones that didn't explicitly state compatibility, though for certain reasons they were unable to include the AC Accelero S1 in the testing but promised a followup.

For those who've already put a new cooler on their 8800gt's...a couple questions:

on a scale of 1-10, with 10 being the hardest...

how hard is it to remove the stock panel/fan/heat sinks?

how hard is it to add the cooler/heat sinks to the card?

I've never done this to a video card and if i do it, i don't want to get in over my head an hose the card. I've built many a machine from scratch, but i've never tried replacing a cooling solution on a card like that. Just trying to gain as much info as possible.

Thanks!

If you can use a screwdriver, you can handle the removal/attachment of VGA coolers. Some get applied differently than others, but none of it is rocket science.

The important part is to *clean off the GPU and RAM surfaces thoroughly* before attaching RAM heatsinks and new thermal grease to the GPU, per their instructions. Pick up the ArtiClean kit for $6 at NewEgg, or wherever.

Thanks!

I was worried that it was going to be harder than it sounded, but doesn't sound like it. I was thinking popping on a duorb based on the article mentioned above. Possibly the 900 series zalman one, too, but it said it didn't come with enough heatsinks. I think you can buy extra for not too much money. According to the review though, they're fairly even.

Last question...If I get the Duorb, i don't need to buy any other parts (heat sink, etc,) right? They're all included. With the zalman, i'd need to buy some heatsinks...which ones do i need to get?

turns out the stock cooler works pretty well if you mount it upside down (at least in my case it is), and ramp up the fan to 100%, i can't hear it over my 2 x deltas and sound blasting when gaming.

mine stays around 60C when gaming normally and idles around 45C

The DuOrb contains 13 BGA sinks, and IMO it's a better solution over the Zalman VF900.
