Hi Gang,

I created this list of free and open source software links a few years ago. I recently updated it, but I think that it needs some link pruning and a few new additions. Do you guys have any suggestions?

Good list. I'm not completely comfortable with your use of the term "free software" since many of the listings are proprietary, and don't grant the four freedoms required for free(libre) software. Probably a bit pedantic, and you'd have to use less popular words(gratis), but there it is :^D

To add to your list, I'd add foobar2000, the best gratis music player...

http://www.foobar2000.org/

And Marble, a libre atlas program...

https://marble.kde.org/

I knew that someone was going to catch that, which is why I used the separate terms of "freeware" and "open source software" in my blog post.

For godsake. You and I both know what he meant. There are more egregious offenses to correct people on the internet for if one deems that necessary.

I'd never use anything free! never! Either paid or Libre Software FTW as my friend lxskllr thought me

FREE = has a reason why it's free! either they want to infect you with PUPs/PIAs or ask you to register with them to spam the living heck out of you and sell your personal information or have ads

"Free software" is a very specific definition, and doesn't include programs like Winamp. Plenty of people that should know better, don't. Being precise with language helps eliminate confusion now and into the future.

Seriously?
Not all free programs are bad, heck, LOTS of non-free programs also have PUPs/PIAs and more.

You do have to a bit of research on the program in question, since there are bad apples all over the place, both free, and non-free.

A lot of the software on my free software list was done by hobbyists who have no interest in making a dime off of their product. A lot of it is open source, while some of the others are stripped down versions of commercial products.

If you find something on that list that comes bundled with adware that you can't easily opt out of, let me know and I'll remove it. I hate that shit as much as everyone else does.

no I didn't literally mean ALL, VLC, CCleaner, and a few others are clean and fine...... I do use a few....but in general, I try to avoid FREE stuff if there's a paid alternative

Thank you, and sorry for generalizing, I should've been more specific and say "most free freeware not all"

I use MPC-HC, HexChat, Pan Newsreader, JBinUP, OBS, Handbrake, SaBnzbd, Quickpar, qbitTorrent and a slew of other programs because they are free.

All of the free programs I use work very well and I have no fear that my information is being used maliciously.

Thanks for the list Ultimatebob. There were a few on their I haven't heard of that I am going to check out.

Nope.. not even most, most are 100% safe with no BS in them.
Some have issues.

Then again, it does depend on where you get them, and what they do.

Alright, just a few I can think of:

Download Shark 007 Codecs and watch your PC get bombarded with viruses. Even if you optout, if you have no decent AV with HIPS and HTTP scanning, stuff will crawl in the background I am speaking from experience.....

BAIDU Browser, BAIDU Optimizer, PC Optimizer, GOM Player, uTorrent (the biggest virus of them all), etc.....I can go on forever

Libre Software FTW

I also posted this list on Reddit, and they messaged me a link to a free software site that's better organized and has links to more software programs than what my site has:

https://ninite.com/

Grr. This site doesn't really describe what any of these products do all that well, but it seems that my site is officially obsolete now

AlternativeTo is a useful site for finding software similarities. A use would be finding a gratis replacement to a paid product, or just seeing what the competitors are doing.

I use Foobar, VLC and MPC-HC media players. Handbrake, CCleaner, Firefox, Cyberfox, Malwarebytes, Filezilla, Notepad++, VirtualDub, SyncBack, TeraCopy and a few other free programs. One of my computers uses a free operating system, you may have heard of it; Linux. I can report that my computers have not exploded and are not being used by Chinese, North Korean or Russian hackers to destroy the world.

If free programs are malicious or harm your computer, they're not going to be very popular and the word will get around pretty quickly. Common sense works if you have it.

"Shark 007 Codecs"? Are you kidding me?

I wouldn't call your site obsolete yet.
I assume that other site is legit but i would rather have a list like you have with descriptions & direct links to the software's site.
