The actual announce and release date for Intel’s new Ivy Bridge, the 3rd generation of Core processors, has been a moving target to say the least. After much shifting around on the calendar it appears Monday April 23rd is going to be the day Intel finally puts out a press release and allows manufacturers such as Dell, HP and Lenovo to start promoting their new Ivy Bridge equipped laptops. It was expected Intel would be making an announcement on April 9th, but that got pushed back due to supply issues. Toshiba decided they couldn’t wait any longer to tell the world what new laptops they had, so announced the L800, C800 and P800, S800 laptops this week. HP has updates to its Pavilion line ready and waiting in the wings, and had to push back their announce date to align with Intel – not that we don’t know everything about the updated 2012 Pavilion dv6 and dv7 already thanks to various leaks.

Intel Ivy Bridge

The new Intel Ivy Bridge processors will feature a smaller 22 nanometer fabrication process and offer more powerful performance but less power draw. That feat is achieved through use of new tri-gate transistors with faster switching capabilities than the current Sandy Bridge processors. There will also be more transistors per chip, and since more equals better performance that’s a good thing. Intel is claiming up to 20% improved processing performance and up to 50% improved graphics with the new HD 4000 integrated GPU. Even though performance improves the battery life will not suffer, in fact Intel is saying the reduced power consumption of the upcoming new Core processors will save up to 20% on power, which could result in 20% better battery life. Couple that with a more power efficient SSD and the next generation of laptops are sure to push the limits of battery life.

Wow I've never heard of vizio before, that is one nice looking laptop.

Does anyone know where I can find benchmarks for ivy bridge battery life? I've read about that elitebook 8470 and the benchmarks from the leaked asus/acer ivy bridge laptops (I always get the two mixed up... forget which one it was) but nothing has really been said about battery life....

For example, the dell xps 15 l512x with the 35w i7 and 9 cell battery has 'up to' 5 hours of battery life.... wtf? I have the l502x with 45w i7-2630qm, gt540m, 1080p display and 6 cell battery and I have gotten 4.5-5 hours of real use battery life from 100% to 5-10%.... I assume by "up to" they mean the maximum battery life with all settings turned low.... are these numbers right? I was expecting much better numbers from ivy bridge =(

Battery on the L512X may be 9 cell, but its a small one at 65WHr.

Yea I noticed that; my l502x 6-cell is 56WHr for the record. I guess I just overhyped myself on how much the battery life would improve by... seeing the expected max battery life at 5 hours just shocked me a bit. I mean, don't they usually have an estimate that exceeds real world usage figures? Also, I might have missed something but it doesn't seem like there is even any REASON for the battery life to be so low... how can you have a package where every part should use less power and somehow end up using more? I guess I'll just have to wait for the reviews to see what's going on haha

This is their first entry in the PC market, they've been making tvs for years (among other products). They never were really a 'premuim' brand but always a really good buy for the price, these laptops seem like they're trying to raise the bar a bit.

Personally, even though they're new at it, I've seen laptops from every major brand fail in the first year so I see no reason to not pick it up if it looks good and has no obvious issues.

The new ThinkPad E430 looks god-awful. I don't know what Lenovo was thinking, but I'm glad I got my E420 instead for $550 and it has a fingerprint reader and Bluetooth.

given how people create products, I suspect the shorter run time with the better power using equipment is the side result of a smaller battery / lighter laptop which is more attractive than having a run time of 8 hours (number grabbing).

Thanks for the info OP.

I'm glad to see ivybridge laptops available april 23rd. I really hope we see a lot of 8 hr battery life laptops though. Needing a solid one for school and I really hate having to worry about charging it all the time.

not sure if serious

Haha I was just thinking the same thing... they look similar.

I think the new e430 is smaller though.. look at where the trackpad buttons are on the e420.. they are gone in the e430. Also, for the screen, the e420 had it open up on 'top' whereas the e430 has it open up from the 'back'. The bezels are also a lot thinner on the new e430.

With all this combined, I guess the new e430 looks a bit disproportioned if you are used to the look of the e420... kinda like the xps 14z wehre they stuck a 14'' display on a 13'' body...

Nice work.
And now I will list all the Ivy's with high resolution, high quality, IPS displays:

That should do it.

While I agree it would be awesome to see them, I'm hoping we'll at least get higher resolution screens with Ivy Bridge. 14-15" 1600x900 or something would be nice, but I think you're right. We're probably going to be stuck with lots of 15" 1368x768 or whatever.

13" and 14" should be 1600x900 and 15" should be 1080p.
And they all should be good quality IPS displays.
I mean they can so a super high resolution, wide color gamut IPS screen in the new iPad right? They can still sell the crappy displays to the masses, just give up the option to upgrade to something that really is quality.

I will continue to use my 6 year old Inspiron 640m with the so-so display until I can get a real display on my laptop.

Perhaps you didn't close in on the photos. Some really bad design decisions on the model, and it just makes it look plain uglier.

For example, look at the wasted space on the E430 just above the keyboard--all that for a simple power button.

Look at the bad positioning of the fingerprint reader: it's in a place where your hands are very likely to be when you're using the laptop. I don't know why they didn't keep it in the same place as its predecessor:

The TouchPad: for some reason, on the new one there's no buttons, and it's much smaller.

Then there's the display area: not only are the new display hinges smaller and weaker, but they don't allow you to open the display as much as you could before.

IMO, the new one looks less professional and uglier at the same time because of the things mentioned.

Ivy is bound to be nice but what of Trinity?

The Vizio does throw a curve ball into the game too.

I guess Trinity will probably be a little lower end but better for graphics.

When is trinity coming out? Do you know where I can read more about it? I haven't read much about it....

Perhaps you should be buying a T series then. E is budget system even if it is a ThinkPad.
