I watched Schwarzenneger Total Recall the other day. ....it's, so goddamn terrible. I look at it now, almost can't believe it was made. Production values today look like cheap Sci Fi channel production values. Stupid looking vehicles that make zero sense, with plastic walls that bend when you open doors, wobble when they move. bland studio sets, 60s era "sci fi!" computer consoles that also wobble when people walk near them.

The story is terrible. Arnold is terrible. I mean....he's terrible. I don't recall any bad movies from Paul Vorhoeven (well, OK...that one with Saved by the Bell and strippers), but Total Recall might be the worst. I watched it again because I recently saw the remake with Kate Beckinsale and some other people playing the lead roles and thought...what is the point of this? Why did it get made? So I watched the original again....OK, back to Beckinsale. That's the one you should watch.

--Also, the whole Mars thing does seem super ridiculous now. It doesn't matter if it's the original story, it's just silly in a film like this. The remake does a better job of turning all of Australia into the colony, instead. ...even though the "core tunnel" is also quite ridiculous.
I watched for the first time Feeejack - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Freejack

A 1992 film that has many similarities to Total Recall.
Mick Jagger plays the part that Michael Ironside plays in TR.
Emilio Estevez plays the guy who doesnt understand whats going on. (Arnold's part on Mars)
they have the same camp AF sets with plasticky "futuristic" cars and futuristic "slums".
Plots are different, but they both have a very similar vibe. Rene Russo plays a part similar to what Sharon Stone has in TR.

I was lowkey expecting to hate it, but, aside from the horrible photography, the 1980s CGI (seriously, straight out of DARYL, or Wargames), the film wasn't bad. Not something i would recommend you catch up on, but it was interesting to me as i'd never seen it before.

6/10

... i feel you are being too harsh on Total Recall. There are some great scenes in that film, and while it hasn't aged too well (i'm thinking the fake head scene, and the bulgin eyes scene) in some aspects, it still has a great story, and Arnold is in full form. And the triple titties, those have got to be worth an extra 0.5

Promising Young Woman 9/10

Easily my favorite movie I have seen in the past year about a woman who turns the tables on those who take advantage of women too drunk to consent as well as those who victim blame.

I'm about an hour into Zack Snyder's Justice League. Reserving judgment until the end but so far it's not looking too good.

well, when i first saw CITW, i was pretty much of the same opinion as the Cinema Sins guys. Please let me clarify that i hate cinema sins, they are shit.
But when i saw this video, it explains exactly WHY everything happens in the movies. it is a complex collection of reference to tropes that i was completely oblivious to, and as such, i just was not *getting* what was happening in the movie. Right in front of my eyes, and yet i was not seeing it.

After watching this video a f* light came on and i understood the movie.

.. this isn't something that happens to me .. often. I tend.. i *believe* that i tend to be on the other side of things, i am weary and disillusioned but, actually not being privy to what a film is trying to convey, is not normal for me. Bored yes, ignorant, not so much.

In my defense i have nearly zero experience of horror films, for me it's only ever been Dawn of The Dead, the Evil Dead series, and that's about it. I know what a "final girl" trope is, but it's not something that i would recognize a spoof of unless you reeeeeally explain it to me, which is what this film does.

TLDR: DigDog dumb, film smart.

Note that this video is "everything wrong WITH Everything Wrong with" Cabin In The Woods.

Thank you for the explanations, I also totally glossed over the title w/ the second "everything wrong."

King of Staten Island - 6/10

Rather formulaic, writing was a bit lazy, jokes often landed flat and they needed to drop 20-30 minutes off the meandering script. This movie could have easily turned into a Netflix shit dramedy of 12-episodes 25-minutes long each.
I had no real exposure to Pete Davidson prior to this and his acting has serious shortcomings. Bill Burr was OK. Action Bronson scene was pointless, and I like Mr. Wonderful but it added no value to the film.

I really enjoyed the atmosphere of the Staten Island community and Marisa Tomei was top notch.

Now streaming on Hulu.
I'm a sucker for a good gritty character study and this one nailed it. Many of my friends have dreamed of the van life but not because we have to but because life on the open road is still seen as a lifelong dream for many - Most of these folks depicted in the film had no other choice and the glamour was soon lost. Frances McDormand is always great and was fantastic as Fern. Her road trip, her seasonal work, her grit and determination while being independent. Great film and I'm sure a better book!

you need to say that she was the lead in Three Billboards, that will get people to watch the film.

The Father conveys the story of the gentle but inexorable confusion and dislocation experienced by an Alzheimer suffering aging patriarch. By quiet direction and strong acting -Anthony Hopkins as the father and Olivia Colman as his suffering family-we are literally brought into his disintegrating world, right with him at the end where he asks in existential dispair, who am I ?

In October 1962, a U-2 spy plane photographed nuclear missile sites in Cuba. The story from here is very familiar and the film "13 Days" covers it well. But we have always had a nagging question seldom heretofore addressed: How did the Americans come to know the missiles were in Cuba ? Its not like U2s were flown south every day--they went east and as high as possible . So ?

Now we have a story that, if accurate lays bare the facts of the momentous discovery. (And where these good people get their courage is far beyond me.)

Tina 9/10

She was huge when I was younger with her 'Private Dancer' album and with her role in Mad Max: Beyond The Thunderdome. I never really followed her music after I became a teenager as my musical tastes became much heavier, but I'd see her on TV from time to time performing, and she always amazed me with her amount of energy while performing.

This documentary really taught me a lot of things I never really knew about her (and her life), and I thought it was a cool way for her to say goodbye to all her fans (she's 81 now!). She's always been the kind of person you root for.

Two episodes into The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. Really liking it. The way the titular characters play of each other is great. The new guy is sufficiently good to be a good guy but also sufficiently smarmy and conformist to go against everything he represents. The racial undertones are well done.

Today's movie was Mosul, an Iraqi movie on Netflix about a rogue SWAT team battling ISIS invaders in their hometown.

It's a pretty dark and gritty film, but seemed like a pretty accurate portrayal of modern urban combat. I'll give it a 7.5 out of 10. What's even more heart-wrenching is that it's based on a true story.

I could really use a break from "serious" films like this one, and could really use something more lighthearted and without English subtitles
Mosul 08/10

For those who appreciate heroic war films, and want to see how the local forces developed to carry the fight in Iraq. It has so much verisimilitude, I haven't had a decent meal in a week, keep spitting out grit from my teeth.

Rates just below the group of films that includes Black Hawk Down, Saving Private Ryan, We Were Soldiers Once and Young.IMHO.

"When ISIS took their homes, families and city, one group of men fought to take it all back. Based on true events, this is the story of the Nineveh SWAT team, a renegade police unit ( "renegade" because they can't be bought by the regular Police Commander to look the other way) who waged a guerrilla operation against ISIS in a desperate struggle to save their home city of Mosul."

I have watched Mosul - https://www.imdb.com/title/tt9252468/

on the back of these two recommendations.

"Based on true events", Mosul is the story of Kawa, a 20yo boy who has just joined the police force in the derilic town of Mosul, Iraq. The film starts in media res, with Kawa and his partner being attacked by ISIS fighters. As the situation becomes desperate, a group of Iraqi police, calling themselves SWAT, rescue them and kill the ISIS fighters.
Young Kawa is quickly recruited into this commando team. The story unfolds with the SWAT on their way to a mission objective, with Kawa in tow.

While Kawa is the protagonist, he is very much a Luke Skywalker, caught between both events and also characters greater then him. There is a character arc, but despite him being the protagonist, it's not about him.

This is a pure war film, very similar to Black Hawk Down, and the focus of the film is on the realism of war.

The film is entirely in Arabic (subs available), and shot and acted pretty well (the Iranian colonel was not great). Aside from a couple of bad camera scenes, it's well done.

Now.. based on that, i would give the film a 7.5/10 - it's entertaining, well made, and most important in such films, i never felt that any of the characters were immune to being killed, even the "hero". In one scene, i even .. felt worried. So, props for that.
I did read the reviews on IMDb, which i encourage you do to as well - because i was curious why the score was not as high as i expected it to be. Apparently, there's many 1/10 reviews stating that the facts depicted are not true, that *some other Iraqi faction* did all the works, etc.
There's also some comments on the actual Arabic dialogue being bad, which i wouldn't know as i only read the subs.

I wouldn't expect Netflix to do a proper docu-drama, and yes we should care, because a thing that detracts from a film like this is that war film,. more so those based on real events, are allowed to be limited in scope. In fact, Wikipedia lists it as a "action" film (it's not). You do this when you need to tell a specific story, and are not allowed to embellish it. But if you dont, and you just have a bunch of guys going pewpew in rubble, then it's your shortcoming for not writing a more interesting script. And, the story here is pretty simple, if well made, but it's not the type of story you would expect from Saving Private Ryan. I would say that it's actually quite close to American Sniper, minus all the at-home bullshit.

Anyway, i would imagine your opinion would vary a lot depending on how the events depicted affect you. BUT, since it's just all us yanks here, i think your vote will be: 7.5/10

Justice League / Snyder Cut ~ 8.5 stars

Considering I was dragged to the original which (generously) I rated a 2 this was a borderline miracle .... Batman vs Superman was a little bit worse BUT only a little.

DC et-all needs to IMMEDIATELY FIRE everyone involved with their movies currently and prostrate themselves to Zack begging forgiveness.

The first time I saw her perform I decided she was the top female R+B singer of all time ! Ike and Tina were part of the Rolling Stones 1969 Tour beginning in New York. Tina's performance was used in the documentary film of the tour "Gimme Shelter", which focused unfortunately on the murder which occurred during the final concert in the Tour.
Her performance included an over the top version of " I've been loving You Too Long To Ever Stop Now" . Well what she did with that microphone, in those few minutes , singing with it half in her mouth and her fingers playing taps on the rest sure hooked me. Oh yeah she could sing too.

Tina Forever Baby.

I agree with your rating. This was totally different from the original, but I can't blame Whedon because he came in after Snyder had to leave. Snyder's kid was ill, so he had to leave, and Whedon stepped in. I'm just glad Zack had a chance to do his version, as it was great.

i tried to watch Guns Akimbo. The Daniel Radcliiffe film where he wakes up with guns stuck to his hands.

i could not watch it. Too much ADHD-crowd stuff.
Just watch the trailer a dozen times and you should be good. Also, from what little i saw, it's just a collection of dumb tropes.

Wanted to watch some non filling lite fare with a date so we chose Crazy Rich Asians since it was on HBOMax. Halfway decent for a mainstream romcom.

My expectations were really low so maybe that's why it was ok.

Gekijoban Shirobako 5/10 Boring...

That's kind of a shame. The series was kind of fun, but I also don't know if I'd consider the series to be particularly binge-worthy. Since a movie would be about the same as 5-6 episodes in a row, I guess that could explain it.

On the flip side, the Violet Evergarden and Kimetsu no Yaiba movies are finally coming out. I am a bit worried about the Violet Evergarden movie for the same reason, as while I'm rather fond of the show (and its wonderful art), the show isn't something that I'd usually binge.
