This film seems to have received a lot of underground attention recently, particularly from the HD enthusiasts due to the high quality of the transfer, which probably owes to the spectacular visuals. Tough to describe what's going on here, you just have to see it. I think the closest comparison is Pan's Labryinth (which I'd rate 6/10). It's a fantabulous story, made-up as it goes along, by a recovering suicidal patient in a 1920s era LA infirmary. What sets it apart from Pan's, is that the fairy tail aspects actually tie in to the Real World plot of the film. We get direct parallels, some obvious some metaphorical, which is lacking significantly from PL. So you're not left confused as to what the actual story is by the end.
That being said, it is a strange film from the start. Driving action is not clear at first, so you kinda have to go along for the ride. Accept the stylistic visuals as simply another character, and you'll be fine. I'd say the best aspect of this film is the performance of Catinca Untaru, the young Indian girl. Her non-acting realism is endearing, and not "disgustingly cute," which is the danger with such a character. (Huge props to Tarsem, the director, for her character) AT will like the gorgeous Justine Wadell; and I for one hope to see more of her in the future.
If you loved Pan's Labryinth, you'll probably like this. If you hated Pan's, you might appreciate this more (esp if you were hoping that you would like Pan's but came away disappointed, as did I...).
Certainly worth renting, esp if you want to show off your HD setup.
