[Event Horizon is definitely] one of the best of that genre. I re-watched it on Blu recently and it holds up pretty well.

I totally don't get this. I saw EH for the first time about a year ago and I thought it was horrendously cheesy. The cast was almost uniformly awful, although Sam Neill managed to stand out as even more campy than the rest. I don't know, I liked the concept and the sets were pretty great, but I didn't find it scary and in fact almost gave up on the movie before the end. Maybe you can convert a heathen like me -- what did you find great about it?

Shutter Island - 7/10

As usual... most people hate a movie and I like it.
I love last minute plot twists like this and the I see Dead People movie.

I thought the build-up was great. The tension builds slowly and when that one scene finally comes
(the one where they see the broadcast message from the things that had boarded the ship)
it creeped the crap out of me and I really do not find any movies scary. Don't know, it just worked for me and still does. It's not like it's a great movie, but I found it to be a fun and effective one.

Makes sense. That scene was deliciously creepy. So was
the brief segment at the end where Sam Neill shows Lawrence Fishburne those quick cuts of the crew being tortured (now turned into an infamous animated gif). I kind of sadomasochistically wanted to see more of the "hell" dimension alluded to throughout the film, but maybe this is one of those things that is more effective because the audience doesn't really get to see it.

Also, when I rented EH, I got a bum disc that kept freezing up my PS3 and I was forced to skip about half a chapter. I really wanted to like the film, but the frequent stops coupled with some of the cheeseball performances kind of blew the atmosphere for me. Maybe I'll give it another shot. Thanks.

Paprika - 5/10

Visually, it looks stunning. I'm always a fan of Japanese style animation. But plotwise, it made me go huh? so many times I lost any enjoyment I thought I was having. What really hurt this movie is there are so many things that they never bothered to explain. Like how does the DC mini work? Why do Paprika and Atsuko have personalities that are such polar opposites?
How in the hell did the real world and dream world merge?
The questions keep piling up. I may be just spoiled after watching Inception which is similar in that they both revolve around traversing another person's dream. But Inception at least put in some far-fetched but plausible explanations on how things work. I understand that Paprika may have been trying to emphasize the artistic presentation like a lot of anime movies do but this time it just didn't work.

I liked Event Horizon. From what I remember the acting wasn't too over the top cheesball at all. But I did see it over a decade ago. :\

I also wanted to see more of "that" dimension too.

EH is about the only movie ever to have creeped me out (the scene described a couple of posts above me is one of them), and I don't care for/never have "scary" movies.

I think the reason it's popular is because it maintains a sense of uneasiness throughout the movie, and a couple of those scenes just make you cringe but not in a grotesque way.

The Square - 9/10

IMDB link: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1085507/

Fantastic movie, kept you gripped and ready for something "bad" to happen throughout. Queasiness never leaves you, acting is great - this is one movie that I did not consider/predict one of the suspenseful elements.

Ah yeah, that could definitely ruin things in a film like that. Try it out and let us know if you like it anymore on a re-watch.

Very much looking forward to this one; I have not seen it playing anywhere yet unfortunately. :hmm:

The American - 4/10

I had high hopes for this story of an American assassin working a mission in a small Italian village, despite the mixed reviews. Ebert gave it 4/4 stars, and I had enjoyed Control, the earlier film by director Anton Corbijn (his other work consists of music videos). Unfortunately I was left cold by what I saw.

The good: This movie is beautifully shot and generally very well acted. Violante Placido is stunning and she's nude for a lot of the movie (which made for a slightly uncomfortable viewing with my 69-year-old mother).

The bad: The plot is overly simplistic and the pacing is very slow, which gives you lots of spare time to sit and consider the gaping holes in the script (actually the entire mission that forms 80% of the story is, in my view, nonsensical). There is so little going on that the movie gets quite dull in places - I nodded off, and funnily enough so did a friend of a friend who also saw the movie over the weekend.

I applaud George Clooney's desire to make non-commercial films, but I find it hard not to view this particular film as a failure.

Well that's dissapointing. The trailers for it looked great.

I saw it while browsing PPV couple of days back - was the only thing remotely interesting and non-douchebaggery/dumbed-down.

The Boondock Saints 2 - 3/5

I already knew this was going to be mediocre, and cliche going into it. The first one was was somewhat original for the time of it's release, this just wasn't anywhere near balls to the wall as its' predecessor. If they were going to make a sequal then should have done it alot sooner than now, but at this point in time, they should have just left it alone. The casts acting wasn't entirely convincing. Julie Benz was sexy as always, but that wasn't enough to make the film more than average.

I thought Shutter Island was too cheesy and you basically knew what was going on a little after the beginning of the movie. I was highly disappointed with the move seeing as I love DiCaprio and Scorsese.

Yeah I knew what was going to happen, but I didn't care. I thought the film looked and sounded amazing, plus the way he gets to the conclusion was great. Going to try and re-watch it this week actually.

The Killing Of A Chinese Bookie - 3/10: John Cassevetes' 1976 film about a strip club owner that ends up in debt to some gangsters and has to do work for them in order to pay them off. I think I was supposed to really like this film, but I kind of hated it. I watched the first hour waiting for something to happen, but watching a guy I had no attachment to at all do not much of anything at all was pretty painful (the strib club act was horrendous too). By the time the scene around which the film is named (admittedly a very good sequence) I had pretty much checked out and ended up watching the last 20 minutes on 1.5x speed just so I could get through it. Can't say I'll be watching another Cassevetes film anytime soon.

I loved that soccer stadium sequence; best part of the film IMO. I still think White Ribbon, or even A Prophet should have won that Oscar.

The Killing Of A Chinese Bookie - 3/10:

I saw this a couple years ago, I don't think I enjoyed it much either, but I really can't remember much except the one scene you mentioned.

I watched it because of some Sopranos clip where cast members were talking about their favorite mob/gangster movies, and I believe Michael Imperioli mentioned this one. nothing special
