Secrets Of The Tribe - 8.5/10: So what happens when the ethics and the methods of a anthropological scientist come into question? A bunch of academics slinging barbs at each other and trying to destroy each others' careers and it makes for a fascinating documentary. The field of anthropology made some great discoveries in the 60's and 70's when they came upon the tribe of Yanomami Indians in the Amazon; a tribe that had been untouched by cvilization. From there various anthropologists spent time with the tribes and published all kinds of seminal papers and textbooks. Years later there came accusations of impropriety, including rape, paedophilia, and prostitution, calling into question all of the data gathered from the tribe, but also the anthropological community as a whole! It's essentially a talking heads documentary, but with a damn fascinating subject matter. Recommended.

Beyond The Mat - 7/10: A documentary from 1999 on the professional wrestling industry. It focuses on a few wrestlers (Terry Funk, Mankind/Cactus Jack, and Jake "The Snake" Roberts) and shows them not only preparing for their work, but also their home lives and how their jobs have impacted their family lives. You also get some pretty decent behind the scenes stuff of the WWF (now WWE) and some candid comments from former wrestlers. Watching this, I swear the story of Jake Roberts was the inspiration for Rourke's Randy "The Ram" Robinson from The Wrestler, so many of the story elements are similar, aside from the drug use. If you ever watched wrestling as a kind, which I did, this is definitely worth a watch.

Green Lantern: First Flight 7.5/10 As far as animated comic book movies go I thought this one was pretty good. Tells the story of how Hal Jordan becomes a Green Latern. One of the alien Green Laterns is a squirrel so you have to like that.

Sky High 6/10 Family friendly super hero movie. Super Hero high school were the kids of super heroes go to learn to be a super hero or a side kick. Nothing special but entertaining and has Bruce Campbell in it which is why I watched it.

Donnie Darko was on in HD so I recorded it. Pretty interesting. I like interesting movies. One of those movies you can't really understand though. Also, Seth Rogen is in that mofo! Guess he's been acting a long time. I guess the movie is only from 2001 though, seems like it's older than that.

The Man From Nowhere (Ajusshi) - 6.5/10: A Korean thriller from this year about a mysterious guy who befriends the young daughter of a drug addict; the girl ends up kidnapped by organ harvesters/drug dealers and this man goes on the chase to find her. I really liked the main character, I thought he did well being the mysterious, dangerous type. There are also some really fun action sequences, particularly later on, but some of the emotional bits they put in as motivation for the protagonist just did not work for me and actually came across as cheesy. The action/chase/vengeance elements were enough for me to enjoy the movie, I just wish they could have done better with the emotional parts.

The Vicious Kind - 8.5/10: Wow, I really liked this. It's a relatively simple story about a troubled/confused man (Caleb, played amazingly by Adam Scott) dealing with his estranged Father (J.K. Simmons; always awesome) and burgeoning feelings he has for his younger brother's new girlfriend. The film follows Caleb as he deals with all of this and tries to figure out what is going on in his head and his life as whole. It's funny, it's emotional, and a bit sad and disturbing in parts. Very good movie.

Khuda Kay Liye(In the name of god) 8/10 - Its a Pakistani movie dealing with lives and of three individuals after 9/11. It has got great performances, awesome music score and it does a good job of not taking sides and giving out easy answers. Its a mix of Urdu and English. Only things that is going against it the length of the movie.. at 3+ hours it feels dragged in certain places, but overall a great movie.

The Killer Inside Me: -100/10. I got sick watching this piece of filth. Had to stop early. The director is obviously a perverted, misogynistic psychopath who revels in the suffering of women. Fuck this movie and fuck Michael Winterbottom. Don't try to tell me how deep it's supposed to be, it's gore-porn dressed up as a serious movie.

Well it's from a book. I have yet to see it, but I will, so I can't say for sure, but I bet this is a case, as the one critic said, of "The film's critics, I suspect, have made the classic mistake of confusing content for intent." Calling Winterbottom a "misogynistic psycopath" based on one film is ridiculous, particularly an adapted one.

A Bugs Life - 7/10
Pixar's 2nd effort starts off as a play on Kurosawa's Seven Samurai theme but without all the killing . Pixar is starting to really hone their comedic timing in this effort which is now a staple in all their productions. The emotional impact is not really here and the main character's redemption isn't all that fluid yet, though. But the animation itself is a huge jump over toy story. You can notice a lot of experimentation going on on what can be done in a family film as there was curiously a lot of implied violence that goes on in this one. *
Hopper get shreaded to bits by birds offscreen.

Gallants (Da lui toi) - 6/10: An homage to the old Shaw Brothers films from the 60's & 70's (I have not seen many of those, but I could remember a few elements) with a couple of the guys who actually used to star in those films (Siu-Lung Leung was also in Kung Fu Hustle). I really liked the action in this film, they were actually pretty great, but unfortunately most of the comedic elements fell flat to me. Kung Fu Hustle blended action and comedy much, much better in my opinion.

If I Want To Whistle, I Whistle (Eu cand vreau sa fluier, fluier) - 7/10: A very sparse Romanian film about an 18 year old kid near the end of his 4 year sentence in a youth prison. With only a few days to go, he finds out his Mother has returned to town and is trying to take his little brother away to Italy; this news drives him nuts and takes him to a breaking point, causing him to do whatever he can to get his brother to say. It's quite a minimalist film, with little dialogue for large chunks, so it does feel slow in parts, but the various turning points throughout the film are great and give good emotional heft to everything. A few things were confusing to me and seemed implausible, but that may be due to cultural differences.

Haha, well the film festival is on right now, so I am seeing a few more than normal; happens every year.

I would have to sit down and think long and hard if I were to try and come up with a top 10. I should try and do that one of these days; did we ever do a thread for top 3 or 5 films? I feel like we did. :hmm:

In theater: Inception

Blu-ray: Dark City
- Never seen it before. It's a pretty cool Sci-Fi movie and Jennifer Connelly was hot.

Invincible - 4/10

From IMDB: "Based on the story of Vince Papale, a 30-year-old bartender from South Philadelphia who overcame long odds to play for the NFL's Philadelphia Eagles in 1976."

Caught this movie on cable this afternoon and unfortunately I had already known about the history of Papale before watching the movie. So the entire movie I kept scrutinizing every part where it didn't match the real life events. With knowledge of the actual history, to me, it felt like the movie was trying too hard to make a story more than what it really was. This wasn't "Rudy or "Brian's Song". And Mark Wahlberg seemed emotionless through much of the movie. I would have expected Papale to be over come with excitement at certain points, but Wahlberg plays it off as an emotionless zombie.

Watched "Contact" again today for the first time in over 10 years. In spite of some of the obvious dating of the tech, and the stupid "contact scenes," it wasn't a bad movie overall...

I really hated how they ended the film on something of an agnostic note. Yes they did mention there was "xx minutes of static" thereby semi confirming Jodie Foster's experience but they also let a semi religious note creep in which IMNSHO was an insult to the late Carl Sagan, at that time not long dead.

Machete. 8/10.
Awesome. Dragged at the end. Parts that had meaning to it were meaningless towards the final battle. Lindsay Lohan was useless. Her part at the end was cringe inducing. But so many other good things about this movie.
