Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid - 6.5/10 - At once iconic and empty, this is an undeniably classic buddy film. Paul Newman and Robert Redford always play well off of one another, but the script lacked the nerve to make this more than a simple joyride, enjoyable though it is.
Shutter Island - 5/10 - Everything but the cinematography felt off-kilter in Shutter Island. Given the plot, that may indeed have been intentional, but performances were wooden across the board, with Jackie Earle Haley as the only exception. The ending was a huge letdown -- I was hoping for a last minute jerk of the rug. Passable, but boring.
Blue Valentine - 9/10 - Unflinching, brave performances from both Gosling and Williams. I don't think I've seen such an immersive film in a long time, the effect of which is broken only briefly by a few stutters mid- to late-game. I heard several other theater-goers complaining loudly about the ending on their way out, but I thought it was poignant and perfect.
