The Girl Who Played With Fire - 4/5 - pretty good following of the book. i had just finished reading the books, so the material was fresh in my mind. i don't see how the american remakes can possibly be as good tho. there is just too much restriction on content here.

The Girl Who Kicked The Hornets Nest - 4/5 - see above.

Versus - 6/10: A crazy-ass Japanese yakuza/samurai/zombie film about two guys fighting an epic battle for power over spans of 500 years. This was pretty cool and fun in parts, particularly early on when things are still unclear and there is a mystery element as zombies are popping up and all kinds of crazy fights are happening, but it starts to drag about two-thirds of the way through and I really think they could have shaved about fifteen minutes off the thing to tighten it up. Fun for the first half for sure, I just wish it could have kept that going throughout the rest of the film.

Bubba Ho-Tep - 7.5/10: Bruce Campbell is Elvis, in a retirement home, with a sore on his pecker and evil is afoot as an Egyptian Mummy is on the loose and stealing souls. This was surprisingly pretty awesome. Bruce Campbell was really quite perfect as Elvis; he had the voice and mannerisms down pat and was actually really funny in a lot of parts (there is an awesome scene where he is struggling down a river bank with his walker; the facial expressions are hilarious). Yeah, it's a bit odd that there is a dark comedy mixed with some odd horror elements, but it pretty much all worked for me and I think that is mainly because of Campbell's Elvis, who was a character I really liked and sympathized with. Lot's of fun.

When Harry Met Sally: 8/10

Neither my wife or I had ever watched this movie. So we queued it up on Netflix and gave it a shot. It might be over 20 years old, but it's still just a very fresh, very fun, and very warming movie that really can connect to a number of audiences. Excellent acting by both Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan. The 80's hair and styles were a trip, but everything else is as relevant (if not even more so) today, as it was when the movie was shot.

Great film.

Also...I have to apologize to Netflix and the "streaming" crowd. I've been very vocal about my poo-poo'ing of the technology. Well, I recently resubscribed and have it integrated into my PS3. What a wonderful service for $8 a month. Really, I do mean that. Many of the movies do look as good as, or better than a DVD on my projection screen. It's a great alternative for when you don't know WTF you want to watch and just start flipping through the selections. I'm impressed.

It certainly is not a replacement for physical media, especially BR-D. That's for sure. Some stuff is downright unwatchable due to compression and streaming issues. Plus the sound is pretty nasty. But for an impromptu movie session it's a winner. A great supplement (rather than replacement) to a true disk based rental or purchase collection.

Candyman 5/10
Haven't watched this movie since it came out in 92. It is Based on a Clive Barker book so you get plenty of weird and creepyness but not much gore and not as scary as I remembered. A grad student is doing research on urban legends and hears about the Candyman and ends up summoning him.

This is one of my girlfriend's favorite horror movies. We watched it recently and I thought it was mediocre. I would have given it the same rating.

Watched it on Netflix last night. The first few minutes were promising, then it went downhill pretty quickly.

I liked it better than 3/10. I'd give it 6/10. It was decent enough.
You can watch it again soon enough as "The Eagle"

The wife and I recently went through the full trilogy, and I'd agree they were all about a 4/5. Sometimes a little slow, but pretty good suspense and some nasty violence.
I really liked at the end, how she dealt with her half brother using the nail gun. Pretty awesome.

An American version could be weird, everyone would have guns instead of cell phones.

I think I may have ranked it even higher than that; I thought it was pretty fun. Also it had Fassbender in it, so that's worth a point on its own. :awe:

Heh on the Fassbender comment. Ok.. MAYBE 7/10 for me. it was a while ago. I was definitely entertained with it. I'm a sucker for those types of movies though.

Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid - 6.5/10 - At once iconic and empty, this is an undeniably classic buddy film. Paul Newman and Robert Redford always play well off of one another, but the script lacked the nerve to make this more than a simple joyride, enjoyable though it is.

Shutter Island - 5/10 - Everything but the cinematography felt off-kilter in Shutter Island. Given the plot, that may indeed have been intentional, but performances were wooden across the board, with Jackie Earle Haley as the only exception. The ending was a huge letdown -- I was hoping for a last minute jerk of the rug. Passable, but boring.

Blue Valentine - 9/10 - Unflinching, brave performances from both Gosling and Williams. I don't think I've seen such an immersive film in a long time, the effect of which is broken only briefly by a few stutters mid- to late-game. I heard several other theater-goers complaining loudly about the ending on their way out, but I thought it was poignant and perfect.

Campbell was awesome in that as was Ossie Davis as JFK. Great corny movie.

True Grit 2010 7/10

I expected a lot more seeing as how many good reviews it was getting but I definitely didn't think it was that good. I enjoyed it but just wasn't that good.

I never watch commentaries, but I've heard that this is great, as it is Bruce doing the "real" Elvis, while watching the movie.

"Who the hell's is that? He s'pose to be me?"

I saw "The Mechanic" recently. Meh, not bad as a different "Transporter" - type film, although imo the stunts > the story.

The commentary on Spinal Tap is like an entirely new movie. Super awesome.

I also hear that the "Special Collector's Edition" commentary on Showgirls is awesome--Not sure who it is, producers, writers, whatever, spend the entire time bashing the film with self-deprecating antagonism.

Valkyrie - 8/10: Call me crazy, but I quite enjoyed this movie. I thought the story was very interesting and one I had not heard before and there were quite a few great actors in here doing good work. Sure, some of the writing was a bit, um, simplistic and cheesy, and a few of the attempts at emotional impact fell flat, but it moved at a very good clip and had me interested throughout. I actually liked the fact they did not bother with German accents; it did take away from the realism a bit, but I'd rather the actors just speak in their regular voices rather than attempt shaky accents which would be even more distracting. When done well accents are great and add to the realism, but after a few minutes of watching this film, I completely forgot they were not speaking anything resembling German. Way better than I expected.
