Liam Neeson's character goes to Berlin to attend a conference but ends up in a coma after a car accident. When he awakens, his memory is fractured and another man has taken his identity and his wife. Liam is aging but has become a credible action star but in this film he ends up doing more fleeing than fighting. Is he crazy? Should you believe him? Who are the people after him and, more importantly, why are they after him? I thought the movie was decent, perhaps a little slow, and the payoff isn't as good as one would hope. It's entirely forgettable but the plot kept my interest. It's an okay flick, not terrible, not excellent.

The Mechanic- 7/10. If you go into this film knowing and accepting that it's a formulaic "Jason Statham blows shit up and goes all kung fu on the bad guys while speaking less than 100 lines and generally being a badass" movie, it's perfectly enjoyable. It's not going to change your life, but you'll be entertained.

Scratch - 8/10: Another documentary from Doug Pray (Hype! and Art & Copy); this one is from 2001 and is about the DJ/Turntablist world. Going back to the very roots of it all with Grand Mixer DXT (the guy from the Rockit tune by Herbie Hancock) then following it all the way up to current, at the time, guys like Shadow, Cut Chemist, Qbert, Mixmaster Mike, etc, etc. Again he covers a subject I am invested in as I own a lot of these albums and have seen many of these guys live, so it's a lot of fun for me with some fascinating looks into how these guys come up with the different mixes and techniques. The behind the scenes stuff is great as are the live shows and battles he covers. I know a lot people do not really like this kind of music, but it's very hard to watch some of these guys and not recognize the skill they have. Fun stuff.

Interesting, I didn't even know they remade this one. The original with Charles Bronson is badass. Maybe I'll check it out.

Been awhile since I've seen it and its good and all but man listening to Qbert and Mixmaster talk about interplanetary-this and aliens-that just started to get awkward after awhile.

According to commentary and liner notes on the Special Edition:
Sports Night was picked up AFTER The West Wing. But production BS forced Aaron Sorkin to hold off starting it. He rushed into Sports Night and mid way through the 2nd season he was finally able to start his primary show. He split his time up and the networks didnt like it. They made him choose. Since he had so many issues running his show the way he wanted on ABC (Sports Night) he decided to spend all his time on The West Wing because NBC let him do whatever the hell he wanted.

The next part is considered common knowledge:
He spent those last few episodes doing 4th wall violations by talking shit about the fictional CSC as though it were ABC. Nobody, not any cable or broadcast or premium network, wanted to pick up Sports Night unless Aaron Sorkin was able to work on it full time. All the other networks would have allowed him to take charge and run the show as he saw fit. But since West Wing was already set up and ready to go, he declined all offers.

If you like that stuff at all, I can't imagine how you would dislike this doc.

Yeah, that stuff was kind of odd and a bit annoying, but really it was like two or three minutes of the entire film, so it did not bother me much.

The interviews with Shadow were pretty good; I even watched the extra stuff on him. Cut Chemist was pretty hilarious. Overall most of the guys were cool and while Qbert and Mike did have a few annoying snippets, it was not enough to take away from my overall enjoyment of the thing.

I've always meant to check out Sports Night, but I never even see it anywhere around here. I never got into the West Wing, but Sports Night seems to be up my alley.

Capturing the Friedmans - 8/10
I liked it, but didn't love it. Before I say anything else, if you haven't done so already, check out the wikipedia page. Some very interesting things, wow http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Capturing_the_Friedmans

Anyway, it was a fascinating story, very sad. I'm really not sure what to believe.
When Jesse's lawyer was talking about Jesse basically confessing, that was strong evidence. But if the lawyer did make that story up to try and get leniency for Jesse, he would have a reason to deny it, but that would be pretty fucking bold. All the questioning of the children and all that stuff is pretty important also, but who knows what was left out. I really hope they weren't innocent, that would be terrible
Aside from that, I thought the movie was too much of the two less interesting characters, Elaine and David, as opposed to Jesse and Arnold, but the reasons for that are obvious. I'm sure I'll look up more about the case in the next couple days, or if anyone has done so, feel free to shoot me a pm

Monsters - 4/10- great idea, good acting, what a waste of my time. This movie could have been so good, but it goes nowhere. Are the aliens semi-intelligent? Are they eating humans or just pissed off? How about maybe watching some hatch rather than see glowing tree fungus? Besides the one scene all encounters with the aliens were anti-climatic. I think I know why gas masks were important, maybe. And, what is so emotionally uplifting about watching two 100 foot earth walking octopi mate by touching tentacles?

I really do not think that is the point of the film.
I mean it's essentially a road movie with the two characters coming closer together as they deal with this harrowing situation. It's not really a monster movie at all, it's a relationship movie; the threat could have been anything to serve as the vehicle for the rest of the film, it just happened to be aliens in this case. In my opinion the point of that alien scene near the end is to comment on us/the government, almost showing a parallel between the aliens and the two main characters, yet the humans and army do not show any humanity towards the aliens, we are just bent on conataining or destroying them. It sounds trite, but maybe we are the monsters.

As for showing more of the aliens; this was a micro-budget film and any aidditional alien work would have upped the budget significantly. For the amount the film cost I thought it looked quite fantastic. I actually would have preferred if he hadn't shown the monsters at all; I think it would have been more effective as a film that way, but I see why he did. Anyway, I didn't love the film, but I liked it for what it was.
