I'm interested to see how Source Code turns out, which comes out in a few weeks.

KT
I was pretty disappointed in the Source Code trailer. I mean, personally, I'm still pumped about it but it elicited some groans from wife & friends so it may end up being a rental some distance in the future.

Skyline - 5/10
Crap, exactly as i expected.
Somewhat entertaining though.

The Tourist - 6.5/10
Entire movie is rather preposterous, but it's a gorgeous setting with a lot of gorgeous Angelina Jolie.

It looks pretty cheesy to me too. I'll be waiting for reviews for suer.

eh... it didn't make any sense which undermined the whole thing. the human being was completely unecessary to the operation by the films depiction and only exists for the sake of the plot.

I disagree, but I think we went over this a year ago.

Yea probably, but to say it again, what does he do? Mostly he wastes time or does the menial tasks. The robot care taker has enough intelligence to do all the things he is shown doing, and the entire expense and extremely elaborate automated effort/expense/advanced technology involved in creating and maintaining the sham situation totally undermine the idea that he is necessary at all. So the only reason for all this is so there is a plot at all, and so it fails for me once I realize that.

The human has to get the H3 out of the harvesters, in order to send it back to Earth.

Yep plus he had to deal with any large scale issues with equipment out in the field. Sure, things in the base could all be handled by Kevin Spacey, but those other things required human intervention, which is why he was there.

Europa - 7/10 - 1991
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0101829/
Interesting movie, very stylistic and well made, story is slow, but told very well. It is pretty gripping given it's pace.

Metropia - 5.5/10 - 2009
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0985058/
Good visuals, bleak dreary story told in bleak dreary way. I think it was intentional, but, it prevents this movie from ever becoming really "good", just sorta "blah." I did like it overall.

Ahh Zombies - 5/10 - 2007
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1027762/
This one is hard to really judge.
Production was good, much better than many other films with much larger budgets.
Concept of movie was very interesting and unique.
But, it sucked. Acting was bad, story may have been based on a good idea, but it was terrible. Didn't have any funny or scary moments in it, and for a "horror comedy" that's not a good thing.
I'm rating it 5/10 due to their production quality and novelty of ideas.... but really, this would probably be a 3 or a 4 otherwise...

Hard Revenge Milly - 7/10 - 2008
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1483385/
I'm a sucker for a good revenge film. This is a short (at like 50mins), but it's loaded with blood and guts. It is one of those over the top blood/gore flicks, but, in this film the characters have more personality. The fight scenes are quite good. IMO, a lot better than things like Tokyo Gore Police and Machine Girl. This is pretty much fvcking awesome.

Ong Bak 3 - 3/10 - 2010
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1653690/
I loved Onk Bak & The Protector. I thought Ong Bak 2 was quite good.
Ong Bak 3 is WTF????? They tried WAY too hard to be stylistic, and forgot about the substance... Very strong Technical skills in terms of fight scenes and camera work, but, this movie looked like it got a ton of budget and then they spent it all playing the game "lets play with the cameras" and then they ran out before they got a script or even a story and decided to "wing it."
Also, Fvcking bullshit rope tricks. LAME LAME LAME!!!

Days of Darkness - 3/10 - 2007
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0499456/
Acting is terrible! story is bad. Script is garbage. Pretty much cliche after cliche. Has a few funny moments, but overall, disappointing.

Portlandia Episodes 1-3 - 9/10: An original series on IFC - http://www.ifc.com/portlandia/ - starring Fred Armisan of SNL fame and Carrie Brownstein of indie rock band Sleater-Kinney. As a longtime Portland resident, I'm finding this show awesomely hilarious, losing a point only because of how uncomfortable I get listening to Brownstein's voice when she's doing her Mitch character. Pretty sure that's the intent though. Episode 1 had me immediately, with Armisan proclaiming Portland is "where young people go to retire!" and it's "as if the Bush Administration ever existed!"; both ostensibly true as anyone who's lived there can attest.

Cameos and guest appearances abound: Aimee Mann, Sarah McLaughlan, Portland's own Mayor Sam Adams playing the IT support guy on E2...

Highlights for me included "Portlands Adult Hide and Seek League" (probably real lol), Armisan & Brownstein ordering chicken in a restaurant, then deciding to drive 30 miles south to meet the Organic farmer who raised the chicken to ensure it had a good home, Armisan's portrayal of the fixed-gear bike guy...all around good stuff.

I watch very little TV, so I'm not sure if this is doing well or not, but I expect it to die because it's actually quite good and probably undigestible for lots of folk. Although since it's on IFC maybe it will live. Who knows.

Yeah a friend of mine caught a few episodes when she was in the US recently and has been raving about the show. Unfortunately it's not anywhere on TV up here as far as I can see. :hmm:

Yeah, Von Trier! Making my way through his entire discography and this is definitely one that jumped out. Going to push it up my list now.

KT

Not really familiar with any of his other works, I've heard of Dancer in the Dark and Antichrist, but haven't seen them or anything else he's made... This was a surprise for me, I had no idea what to expect, but I really thought it was good.

The Kingdom by von Trier is a classic. The sequel was disappointing but had its moments. Sadly one of the lead characters died after it and Triers said he won't make the final part without him.

Edit: it's "The Kingdom: Series 1" on Netflix streaming. Not to be confused with the American remake.

Dogville is one of my favourite films of all time. You should really see it when you have a chance; it's Von Trier's masterpiece as far as I'm concerned.

12 Angry Men (1957) - 9.5/10: One of those films I've been meaning to see forever and just never got around to it; the recent discussion here spurred me to watch it as soon as I could and I was not disappointed int he slightest. Pretty close to a perfect film, almost all taking place in the jury room as the 12 guys try and figure out whether to send an eighteen year-old kid to the chair or set him free. I thought all of the personalities were great and the dialogue was pretty sharp; I liked having the whole crime unveiled just by the recounting of the jurors. Surprisingly fun movie too.

Hair Extensions (Ekusute) - 8.5/10: Damn, way better than I expected. A kind of ridiculous Japanese horror movie about a cadaver that has hair that grows endlessly, which is turned into hair extensions that end up killing people. It sounds completely stupid, and in a way it is, but in another way it's kind of awesome. The main character Yuko is great and I really liked her; the horror side of things was a lot of fun too, but the relationship between Yuko and her Niece from her negligent and abusive Sister was really good and added another side to the film I was not expecting. So a ridiculous story, decent relationships, and some great deaths, made for a very fun little horror movie! This was done by the guy that did Cold Fish (Tsumetai nettaigyo) which was in my top 10 films from last year.

Watched this last weekend and pretty much agree

Death Race 2000 6/10
This is a really bad and stupid movie but the camp and cheese factor are high and the basic idea is great. How can you not like a movie where people get points in a race based on who and how many people they run over? Netflix streaming.

I Hope They Serve Beer in Hell 7/10

The Pro Reviewers hated it, giving it 20%. The Community was split either Loving it or Hating it 60%. I found it quite hilarious. It's a typical Bachelor Party movie and wasn't Original in any way. It had good Characters though. This movie is definitely not for everyone though, especially anyone who is uptight about Sex, Naked Dudes, or jokes denigrating women.

One of my favorite movies now. It's not a "good" movie that critics and people that want a deep plot or anything, but it's hilarious in a crude way. Jesse Bradford's character is great and each of the three remind me of someone I partied with in college. Great stuff.

Battle Los Angeles 3/4
After reading critic after critic pan this movie, I was expecting a turd of a movie and was pleasantly surprised.
It is all-action with paper thin plots and characters but it all somehow works.
The movie starts off with a bang when aliens invade the planet reducing Los Angeles to rubble. A group of Marines are given the mission to retrieve some civilians trapped behind the lines before a bombing campaign is due to start. The bulk of the movie involved firefights and it becomes a sort of Black Hawk Down meets War of the Worlds.
I hated the shaky cam and the ending was dumb but I definitely enjoyed this movie.

Piranha 3D 1/4
What the hell?
I love b-movie camp with humor and boobs but this was just one big waste of time. Nothing worked.

What a fucking turkey this one was. It was so bad, I couldn't watch more than the first hour...and kept banging my head at the stupidity of it...I finally just deleted it from my DVR.
Since Judd Nelson was the star, I shouldn't have expected it to be worth watching...but I was bored.

Rango 5/10

I didn't really like this. I got easily bored with it. I did laugh out loud at some parts but overall I didn't find it that interesting. Maybe because the story line has been done millions of other times and this was done with practically no variation. The critics seem to like this but it was just too predictable for me. The animation was really great though. High quality animation but low quality storyline. This is the same way I felt about Despicable Me, same overdone storyline and not even attempting a unique take on it. I feel animation should make it easier for them to spice up the stories since you can do so much more with animation, but unfortunately most don't take the risk.
