Year 2002 I had a Dell Celeron 700 Mhz CPU w/Integrated graphics. I do say, solitaire was the best game I ever remember playing.

Other than that, I would have to say... Quake. In more recent months or even year, I would say Command and Conquer .

Freespace2.... best space-sim to date (Elite and Frontier werent directly comparable imo)

C&C Red Alert - most fun RTS Ive played to date (think it was 1996)

Diablo2 + expansions - I havent found the money to buy Sacred yet so I cant comment

Need For Speed Underground - No racing game has hooked me this much since Top Gear 2 and Jaguar XJ220 (Amiga)

Im going to find a shovel and dig up some more CD's from my time capsule, post later.

Does anyone remember Forsaken? I think Acclaim did it with some other developer. 360 degree fast paced 1st person, single or multiplayer shooter.
Graphics were absolutely incredible for its time. Now thats a game I would like to see a new and improved sequel to.

Anyways, that was one of my favs.

Hey I remember Forsaken. I think it came with my Diamond Viper V330 or something. It was A LOT like Descent except faster, harder, and 3D accelerated (at the time). I also it running insanely fast and smooth with a Riva128 on a Pentium II 266... Heck it looked great and played well on systems with the standalone Intel i740 graphics cards. Yes, they existed before being integrated into Intel chipsets like the 810/815 etc.

Classic games that ate up way more time while in college (1997-2001):
- Warcraft II (RTS)
- Quake/Quake World/Team Fortress, Quake II (FPS)
- Tetrinet (puzzle)
- Starcraft/Brood War (RTS)
- Moto Racer (racing)
- Quake III, Unreal Tournament, Half-Life/Counter-strike (FPS)
- Diablo II/+expansion (Action/Adventure)

After out of school (2001 to present)
- Warcraft III (RTS)
- Unreal Tournament 2004 (FPS) since yesterday

Starcraft, for the sheer cutting-edgeness of having 3 different races.
Startopia, a GREAT game to play through once, but unfortunately not much replay value.
Warcraft III, no need to explain I don't think.
Diablo II, See above.
Unreal Tournament, for being so readily moddable, and for upping the stakes in terms of online play.
Quake III Arena
BF:1942, gotta love a vehicled war game with such a great mod as Desert Combat.
Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory, for it's great play and simplicity.

PS: Doom 2 was released way before 96, as were: Star Control 2, Quake, Warcraft II, and Master of Orion 2...

I'll just try to come up with any games that were memorable...there weren't too awful many.
Half Life - FPS
Counterstrike - FPS
Homeworld trilogy - RTS
Giants: Citizen Kabuto - FPS
Jedi Outcast - FPS
X-Wing vs TIE Fighter - Space fighter sim
X-Wing Alliance - Space fighter sim
Quake III Arena - FPS
Need For Speed III - Driving sim
Dune II - RTS
Command and Conquer Red Alert - RTS

Those are all the good games that I can remember playing, at least POST-DOS, with the exception of Dune II. First-person shooters, space/overhead view strategy, and piloting sims. I'm mainly in the FPS area right now; it's been awhile since I've done any of the flying/driving sims, and Homeworld 2 takes a lot of time.
