Tribes I MP-FPS
Nothing has even come close.
RIP T1 :brokenheart:
Tribes 2?
I thought it was a much more polished game (Tribes 1 always seemed a bit flaky/buggy to me), but it does have some balance issues on certain maps (places where it's almost impossible to defend the flag if the enemies attack from certain directions, places where enemies can camp inside your bases indefinitely and mortar-spam, light armor with energy packs being generally unstoppable on certain maps if they know how to use anti-missile flares properly...). I haven't played it for quite a while, though, so maybe they patched some of those out.
I'm still waiting eagerly for Tribes: Vengeance.
Oh, and amazing games:
System Shock (God, I miss Looking Glass Studios. Best. Game. Ever.)
System Shock 2 (not quite as good as the original, but still a great game)
Deus Ex (Warren Spector's next project after SS2)
Descent: Freespace (best space combat sim ever, in my book; sequel's also very, very good)
X-Wing (variants/sequels too numerous to mention; not *quite* as good as Freespace, but Star Wars license makes up for it)
Descent 2 (killer game for the time; Descent 3 was real pretty but impossibly hard)
Starcraft (still the best RTS, IMO. Polished, balanced, and incredibly fun.)
Warcraft 2 (a lot of 'firsts' for RTS games happened here)
C&C Red Alert (didn't like the newer ones as much)
Homeworld (very underrated; haven't played the sequel yet)
Fallout (unbelievably fun RPG; sequel has better production values, but is much harder and not nearly as funny)
Diablo 2 (fun for a while, gets REALLY repetitive eventually)
Mechwarrior 2 (killer game, though a tad buggy in places, especially in the expansion pack. Haven't played the more recent MW games, except MechCommander 2, which is also fun)
Half-Life (nuff said. Still haven't seen a better single-player FPS, and the multiplayer is great as well)
Counter-Strike mod for HL (really, really, REALLY fun... for a while. A lot like Diablo 2; I can't understand why so many people are STILL playing it...)
NOLF (funniest dialogue I've ever heard in a game; NOLF2 and Contract JACK also very good, but less hilarious)
Rainbow Six (the concept, anyway; game itself was frustrating as hell due to crappy AI, but the sequels improved there)
Max Payne (very well-done story-driven action shooter. Love the cheesy comic-book interludes. Sequel is waiting to be installed on my computer when I have some free time.)
Dark Forces 2: Jedi Knight (mmm... lightsaber.)
Tribes 2 (GREAT game, great fast-paced online team play; pick it up in the bargain bin if you can. Sequel coming out this year using the new Unreal Warfare engine)
Battlefield: 1942 (very fun, another great team-based game with well-done vehicles and somewhat realistic gameplay)
Quake 2 (took everything good about Quake and made it even better)
UT2K3 (liked it better than UT and Q3:A put together)
And, my random vote for a game that probably three people have played, but that was still awesome:
Terra Nova: Strike Force Centauri (another Looking Glass Studios gem; built on the same engine as System Shock but with some serious enhancements. Think Tribes, but single-player with AI teammates, mission-based gameplay, and an excellent branching storyline).
