Nothing has even come close.

RIP T1 :brokenheart:

Agreed. The best multiplayer FPS ever, in my opinion.

Also, its not dead as far as pubs are concerned. 5150 has some servers up, and they are always full. Some really good pickups all time of the day. There are some other servers too.

Tribes 2?

I thought it was a much more polished game (Tribes 1 always seemed a bit flaky/buggy to me)

Tribes2 was a prettier game but didn't have the feel that Tribes1 had. Skiing was dumbed down and felt mushy. I played it for about 2 months and between the mushy physics and the constant UE's, I gave it up.

What made T1 great was the speed and easily accessible flags. The vehicles were pretty much useless. They tried to make them relevant in T2 and lost what made T1 great IMHO.

I'm still waiting eagerly for Tribes: Vengeance.

I'm a bit more skeptical this time around. With old-school Triber's like KineticPoet and Thrax working on it, I'm optimistic but I won't go sink a bunch of cash into a new machine and slobber like an idiot like I did with T2.

No particular order...

Quake - FPS.
Half Life - FPS
System Shock 2 - RPG
Deus Ex - RPG
Planescape: Torment - RPG
Baldurs Gate 2 - RPG
Worms World Party - Strategy/wormage
Carmageddon 1 & 2 - Splatterfest penguin butchering driving.

Any others I can't remember don't belong on my list - see title.

That's funny -- I *hated* the breakneck pace, ridiculous skiing, and total lack of defense in T1, and I thought the vehicles were a blast. To each his own, I guess.

Yeah, the cutscenes were actually good, though the sound was usually out of sync by a few seconds in some of them.

I remember how beautiful some of those environments were. I know the island...Sorcha Island was it? Where Timmy's parents lived. Very well-rendered landscapes there. I just didn't play it as much as I'd wanted to, as the control of it wasn't as...responsive as I was used to, like with Half Life or Quake III based games. The mouse just wouldn't command the game quite like I'd wanted.

I do remember too trying to enable FSAA back when I was running Giants on a Geforce2 card. Sure it looked great, but I only got about 4fps. My Radeon 9700 Pro did a LOT better.

There was no lack of defense. Perhaps you only played pubs? In a match, it was very hard to cap on a good team. T2 put too much power to the defense, and it slowed the game down big time. All you had to do was put up a few turrets, and have everyone around the flag have an elf. Not much skill in that.

I did play mostly on public servers, and I recall quite a few maps where there was almost no way to defend your flag since your base was so exposed. It's been a few years, though, so perhaps changes were made, and I know there were a lot of cool mods as well, but I didn't play many of them.

I don't mind the game being slowed down. I like more of a strategic battle rather than a "who's the best at nabbing a flag and skiing across the map without getting caught" game. And you ever tried holding down a flag by yourself in T2? It's not as easy as you make it sound if the attackers work together and know what they're doing (although most don't, at least in pickup games). I don't play on an organized team, so maybe the balance is different there, but for public games, I vastly prefer Tribes 2. Like I said, to each his own.

Havent played it in about a year.... The graphics looked as amazing 1 year ago as they did when I first played it....

Perhaps x8 AA and x16 AF will help keep its graphical wonder.

The nebula.... that looked awesome.... with all the shader advances since then, its not even worth thinking about...

Dreaming of something that will never happen any time soon

I can understand your view more since you never played in an organized game. On a good skill level pub though, capping the flag is pretty hard. And very hard in an organized game.

Im just a little bitter about T2. They took what was my favorite game of all time, and neutered it. Virtually all of the "hardcore" T1 players hated T2. It was filled with bugs, and ran dog slow. They took out trees, added fog, and changed vehicles to get more frames. They took out some features of the game, that are advertised, in-game forums anyone? It UE'd on everyone, almost all of the time. It is 100x better now than when it was released though.

I was in the small closed beta. We told them over and over again it wasnt ready for release, yet they did anyways. Here is my T2 beta CD I was sooo excited when I got that.

I probably would have liked T2 if I had never played T1. I dont have a problem with someone liking T2, more than T1. Im sure a lot of people dont like the breakneck speed of T1. It has the highest learning curve of any game Ive played. The skiing and flying adds so much more to the game. People have a REALLY hard time picking it up, and get frusterated and quit. Its not like all other Quake clones where the same basic movements and circle strafing work for you.

If T1 was the love of my life, then T2 was the drunken driver that blindsided and killer her.

SS2 is one of the best, scariest, most engrossing FPS ever, period. The feeling of desolation and the sound effects were the best. I guess there are patches now even for dated graphics for the AI.

Half Life, DE and RTWC were all pretty good as well. I'm into atmosphere. So if we're talking games underrated, I'd put Undying and Thief 2 in there as well.

Startopia, a GREAT game to play through once, but unfortunately not much replay value.
Warcraft III, no need to explain I don't think.
Diablo II, See above.
Unreal Tournament, for being so readily moddable, and for upping the stakes in terms of online play.
Quake III Arena
BF:1942, gotta love a vehicled war game with such a great mod as Desert Combat.
Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory, for it's great play and simplicity.

PS: Doom 2 was released way before 96, as were: Star Control 2, Quake, Warcraft II, and Master of Orion 2...

You buzz out. If by way before, you mean 95, then yes, it was way before. And Quake was released in 96.

As for my faves. Counterstrike and Day of Defeat ate up a ton of time. Medal of Honor: AA was great in both single and multiplayer. BF1942 and Desert Combat were insane. My first FPS experience was the Quake 3 test and I thought that was great in the summer of 99. I also am a fan of Age of Mythology. Someday I'll finally finish Thief II....
