Perhaps still my favorite PC game of all time.

These are all games that kept my attention for at least 6 months.

Command & Conquer (& Red Alert I & II)
Total Annihilation
Serious Sam (& Second Encounter)
Battlefield 1942 (& Desert Combat)

I swear I played Total Ahhihilation almost exclusively for two years...
Now going on a year and a half with BF 1942...

Homeworld - graphically glorious, amazing story, best atmosphere in a space game (Barbers Adagio For Strings playing when you got back to find your homeplanet devastated, I felt so immersed I nearly felt as though they were my own), Good RTS to boot.

Thief - Ingenious gameplay, too slow for my tastes but its probably the best Stealth FPS going. Medeival settings made it feel great.

And yes, surround sound + AvP = more scary

Havent played it in about a year.... The graphics looked as amazing 1 year ago as they did when I first played it....

Perhaps x8 AA and x16 AF will help keep its graphical wonder.

The nebula.... that looked awesome.... with all the shader advances since then, its not even worth thinking about...

I may have missed it, but why is it that no one mentions the Mechwarrior series?

MW2 is the game that got me into PC gaming. 3 wasn't great, but MW4 is still very fun and can stress out most modern computers.

I still love the original Mechwarrior 2 though. Just need to find a voodoo card and build an old school gaming comp.

Battle of Britian(may have been before 96, not sure but was a great Lucas Arts game)
Call of Duty(my 6 year old actually beat the whole game)
Alien VS. Predator(not as good as the Atari Jaguar Version but still decent)
M.O.H. all of them
Wolfenstein Enemy Territory(has to be the best game ever given away)
Black Hawk Down(gotta love killing skinnies)
Unreal(came with my Diamond Viper Voodoo Banshee and made my jaw drop, running in glide)
Half Life Team Fortress Mod
BF1942 Secret Weapons and Desert Combat 7.0(love being a sniper in Basra)
Day of Defeat
Army Men RTS(not really my game but my kids play it non-stop)

I loved all of the Mechwarrior series - I still play MW2! Mechwarrior 3 is the one that hooked me. MW4 was even better!

Red Faction was a fine FPS.. seems totally unrelated to FS2 ..... I heard many a rumour of Freespace3 being called something like Pheonix and being Xbox only. I personally cant see the Terrans and Vasudans having a ghost of a chance although a good few Mlojnir Beam Turrets next to a gate would really give a Sathanas a scare. The Colossus had Doomed written all over it.... such a big ship without adequate firepower or armour. Unless the Terrans start manufacturing Maras and decent Capital ships, they stand no chance.

EDIT: Id particularly like to know what happened to Bosch. How did the Shivans build such an Armarda in that time period? Whats behind the 3rd Knossos Portal? What did those Sathanas-class ships do to that Sun and why? most importantly WHERE IS FREESPACE 3?

Mechwarrior2 was my first ever PC game. Its such a shame that MW4 was poor... Mech3 was great. They really need a new engine and to bring some fun back to the Genre. Ghost Bears Legacy would be turning in his grave. MW2 Mercs was outstanding, MW4 Mercs could have been so much more.

I have to agree with many and say Tribes 1 was probably the game that sticks out the most.

While the press was moaning over id's decision to make Q3 multiplayer only (oh what a trend setter.. what a crazy risk taker that Carmack is) I was already playing Tribes. Vehicles, multiple classes, huge terrains, native Glide support. It was years ahead of anything else in the multiplayer FPS world. That game was so fun when played with an intelligent team. Tribes 2 sadly was a big disapointment. I'm excited to see that T3 will be using the UT engine... I think the lag and poor OGL engine of T2 is what killed my interest in it.

Nice to see Tactical Ops got a mention too.... another great game (mod really) that I wasted far too much time playing.
