On his latest album, The Less You Know, The Better, Josh Davis (a.k.a. DJ Shadow) continues to showcase his skills as a left-field hip-hop shaman and sample-loving weaver of gritty, mystic tales of the everyday. Recalling much of his early work, but with a refined slant, the new record has a thoughtfully sequenced beginning, middle and end. Think of The Less You Know, The Better — out Oct. 4 — as an epic film score without the film.

DJ Shadow is a sort of sonic Merlin: He's known and revered for his buoyant beats, hypnotic loops and dark textural expanses, but he leads listeners to places where a nightlight, and even sunlight, can be glimpsed. Highlights of the new record include collaborations with an impressive array of vocalists, including Yukimi Nagano of Little Dragon, Posdnuos of De La Soul, Tom Vek and Talib Kweli. But at the end of this star-strewn roller coaster, intensity and mellow introspection await.

Ok, it's not the worst thing I've ever heard. If you're young and this is your first exposure to this kind of thing, I can see how you'd like it. But I'm in my 40's, and so far I'm not hearing anything original. It's a variety of rehashed old styles. That said, he does a nice job of it.

Give Endtroducing a try, it really is an incredible effort. An entire album completely made up of samples.

I don't generally like the songs that are just a beat with stuff built around it. Too formula, too easy. Like every kid that stole fruity loops making beats in his basement. Not to get into the whole producer vs musician thing, but it just doesn't grab me.
I did listen to that first album all the way through. There was a slow piano song, 3rd track I think, that had my attention. And I've listened to a few Endtroducing tracks. He seems talented technically. I just haven't heard anything to move me off of my old electronic stuff (Yello, Art of Noise, Kraftwerk, etc).
