Whoa!! You better edit the title of the thread. This is NOT a DVD/CDRW combo drive it's simply a 16X DVD Drive (48x cd read).

From Dell.com,

The high-speed, high-performance 16X DVD-ROM / 48X CD-ROM EIDE Drive

Lite-On doesn't even make combo drives (at least not yet)

Just get your order up over $50 for free shipping. I have no idea if it's $50 before coupons or after. Might have to dink around to figure that out...

Oh, I changed the title of the thread as not to give anyone heart-attacks

By the way, these drives ARE NOT OEM. I just received mine today (ordered yesterday, is Dell fast or what??). It comes in std retail packaging. You get the drive, audio connector cable and Cyberlink's PowerDVD on CDR. Instructions...etc...etc...

Coolest thing is it matches my Dimension 8200. Black, baby! Heh

Dealmonkey: Since every DVD drive on the planet plays CDs, the only time that "Combo" is used to descibe a drive is when it does CDRW and non-writable DVDROM, in addition to normal CDs.

I bought this drive last month and it's a nice quiet drive. Retail packaging, with PowerDVD included. Good deal.

Squalish - I totally understand. I was doing a lot of copying & pasting from Dell's site to here and for whatever reason, they describe it as a "combo drive." I inadvertantly copied it over and didn't really think to change it. Sorry for the confusion

Anyone know how quiet this is? My 12x Toshiba DVD-ROM just died, and the thing was whisper quiet. My roomate bought some no-name 16x a while ago, and the thing is a freeging jet engine. My hearing has already started to go, and noise reduction has started to become my #1 priority, especially since this is my DVD player as well . . .

Chu,

I just installed this drive last night and played a few DVD's. I have to say it's very quiet. I think someone else in this thread mentioned they thought it was quiet too. It's all relative I suppose, but that's two votes

i have both a 16x toshiba and lite-on, and although the lite-on is fairly quiet, the toshiba is quieter.

Yeah I have to say the Toshiba is quieter than the Lite-on too, also the loading sound ( when the cd/dvd first spins) on the lite-on doesn't sound too good to me. But IT Rips DVDs super fast so I 'm using that over the Toshiba right now.

Chu -
One thing I would reccomend is staying away from anything slot-loading. I have heard that Samsung drives, for whatever reason(probably has something to do with their proprietory bezel), are exceptionally quiet. If I were you, I would go with the Samsung SM-332. It's around $80-90, and it has DVD-playing, CD rewriting, and some specialized stuff like Mt. Rainier writing. It does have a proprietory bezel though, so don't expect to get an aftermarket black bezel.

Does anyone know if this is the drive that has the headphone jack and volume control on the front? Also, does the 10% stackable coupon count toward your whole order or just individual items (i'm planning on buying two of these drives)? Thanks

According to pricewatch, the 16x Toshiba DVD-ROM is avaliable for $38 shipped. I'd take that over this any day for the noise reasons

i have a 16x toshiba, and my wife uses a 16 liteon

there really isnt much difference in the sound
and they both seem to be similar in quality

$33 shipped for a black 16x liteon is a great deal in my opinion

This is the hot deals forum, not FS/FT. There is no thread crapping here, we are all trying to find the best deal possible, which might not be the one that the thread's originator found. if what people above said is true, the I think $38 shipped for a quieter 16x drive is a better deal. If the this drive and the toshiba really are the same sound wise . . .

>> $33 shipped for a black 16x liteon is a great deal in my opinion

It is. But this drive is not $33 shipped, it is $33 + shipping. The $38 for the Toshiba might be cheaper.
