Lite-On 16X DVD+/-R burner $69.96Walmart

To be honest any burner is a poor reader. I can say that the Lite-Ons that I have owned, 5 total, have all been great. I did have one go bad, but I had it RMA'd and the replacement was just great. With DVD burners most of the time it isn't about the burner but the media or firmware. I can say that Lite-Ons are far more flexible than any other brand out there. By that I mean you can change almost anything on it. I mean you can even modify on how to burn the DVD, with the help of some third party programs of course. So that way if you have a problem you aren't just stuck with it. Just my opinions as I really haven't used other DVD burners that much but it's just off of what I have read.

I purchased this drive and then regretted it. Returning it for sure. They had to get it from the back of the store as it was not displayed on the shelf. For a first dvd burner this is a great deal. I burn mostly dvd+rw and until the standard is faster, no real improvement with this drive.

I have multiple Lite-on 8x DVD burners and one NEC 2500A burner. The lite-ons have been very good and write 8x on many media well. The NEC is a better burner and will make higher quality disks. Both drives have given good media test results (KProbe2). At the same price point, I'd go with the NEC for burning and use Lite-on burner or DVD-Rom for ripping.

buy the NEC for a couple bucks more at most. The liteon is not a great deal. You said yourself you're returning it.

i agree with the nec being a better burner than my 3 lite-ons...but damn is that thing slow when ripping. damn.

get a cheap LG dvd rom. its my fastest ripper.

It can be flashed to a 1633s, which supports dual layer recording at 2.4x, or to a 1653s, which supports dual layer recording at 4x. The firmware for the 1633s gives better results in most cases -- the 1653s is too new, and the firmware is not yet mature. For more information, go to the Liteon forum at club.cdfreaks.com
