Interesting. What part of the world are you in? (checks profile) Florida, eh? That is not in the circular I received here in Texas.

This drive (1613s) is probably the same as the 1633s, the only difference being the dual-layer capability, and a firmware flash will probably deliver that.

Yep, listed in MN also. Thing I noticed in the ad was that it specifically said single layer, as a few others have mentioned.

Went to my local Wally World this afternoon, and there weren't any on the shelf. Didn't even look like there was a space set aside for the drive. I saw a bunch of 8x burners, and a few 16x ROM-only drives, but no 16x burners.

Anandtech just published a Fall 2004 DVDR Roundup: Dual Layer and 16X DVD+R. It is worth a read as the Lite-On drive (1633S) was only middle-of-the-pack. The NEC ND-3500A (linked one post above) recieved the Editor's Choice award, and is actually cheaper than the Lite-On.

Lite-On are usually not re-badged NEC. Anyways, last time I looked, they were still trying to sell 4x Samsung DVD burners for over $100 at my local Wal-Mart, although I did notice that they carry retail-boxed Lite-On drives. I doubt that they have this drive there for that price.

negatory. liteon dvd burners are usually considered mediocre while nec's are considered just about the best.

Some earlier Liteon models were pretty bad. The newer models are allright, but not great. The best DVD burners available right now are the Nec 3500, the Benq 1620, and the Pioneer 108. Newegg sells all 3 of the above models for just about the same price (or a hair less), by the time you factor in shipping versus sales tax.

Ya, I agree. The NEC is my drive of choice right now, but still deciding if I am going to order it or not...

Also, this drive only burns dual-layer at 2.4X. The NEC 3500 burns dual-layers @ 4X. On a 9 GB DVD, that's the difference between 30 minutes and an hour.

I'm glad you guys bothered to respond to this. I just ordered it this evening and turned right around and cancelled. By the time I paid shipping I could have the NEC, and well, it's black too.. so wth, I'll get it instead. Sometimes when I'm not up on my research (despite reading for an hour or so at dvdrhelp), I'm really glad other people are so willing to share valid opinions. Now if they'd just hurry up and tell me if I'm doomed to 4 years of scary kerry.

NEC is a great writer but very bad reader. If you want to buy an NEC writer, make sure you have a separate DVD drive to rip your dvd's.
