I ordered last week for about $54, but order processing never got past step one and today they cancelled my order. When I finally got a human on the phone he speculated I entered my CC# incorrectly, but could not really tell me anything. I reordered today and got a total price just under $50 and must have done something right with the CC# because this time they skipped straight to step 3 and will ship on Wednesday.

My guess is that they could not bear the thought of a Hot Dealer paying anything extra...

One thing about my order though. They must have monkeys packing these things. Mine had 3 layers of Polyair bag pillow packing with it. But they put the drive on the bottom of the box and ALL of the packing on top. :|

Hmmmm...I've been on the fence about this for a few days. Just decided to add it to my cart, and it's charging me for ground shipping. I've taken advantage of Dell free shipping in the past with no problem - what gives? The main page says free through the 30th. Did they kill the free shipping promo early?

i just got mine today. didn't work w/the regular ide port on my mobo (cubx), but worked when i plugged it into my cmd 678 udma 33 controller. pretty fast, a little noisy, i'm happy overall. i paid 50 bucks total (well 20 really since i sold my old one for 30).

anyway, it comes w/cyberlink power dvd 2.something but on www.liteonit.com.tw you can upgrade to 3.0, then go to www.cyberlink.com.tw to get 3.0 patches for winxp. 4.0 is the newest version by the way, but unless you have a bomb speaker setup, most of you probably don't need it.

edit: does dell business ship have different distribution centers than dell home? this is the first time i've ordered thru dell business, and when i checked the status of my package this is what i got (i live in fremont, ca btw)

Got my first one today. Very fast. 10X average transfer rate on my first measurement with Nero Drivespeed. Also very quiet with DVD movies, as the RPMs automatically drop for that.

Mine sure doesn't seem refurbished. Plus, I bopped through about ten of their DVD drives just now and the URLs for all of them had this line. I am guessing that it's not refurbished unless it says "refurbished=yes" or something.

just as i was coming home, the ups guy pulled up.. actually had to sign for it.. is that because it was thru the business division of dell? anyways, manufacture date of 12/2001 as someone mentioned before. so 99.999999% likelyhood that they're new and not refurbs..

what's the best way to make sure the dvd drive is working properly? just watching a dvd movie and making sure it can read a data disc?

just like my old 4x Toshiba DVD drive (works great btw), after unpacking it, when i move the drive around slowly (Very slowly might i add) i can hear something (resistor??) moving around.. like i said before, my old toshiba did that when i first got it but never got any problems with it.. should i be worrying about this?

anyone else have this slight problem?

Mine came today but the box was not shrink-wraped. But once opened, it does not look like a refurbished one.
Besides, the manufacture date on the drive is December 2001, so they would have to be awfully fast at refurbishing these.

I did notice that the drive has JVC on the label, does JVC make some of these drives?

I went through Lite-On's web site, and found the following: (well this is old news already)

You must set its region when you install it. Supposedly there is a patch to remove the region lock, but I haven't tried it and you use it at your own risk.

Don't worry about what shipping date they state. Mine said not until mid february and I already got it installed. BTW, this thing rocks. My Yamaha burner (which says it reads at 40x) ripped wav files at about 17-20x, whereas this thing rips them at 38x on burned media. I'm sure a new factory cd would be even better. One more thing, cd volume on it is fine, but my DVD movies are real quiet. I turned up the volume in powerdvd but that didn't help. any suggestions?

Dell is known for this. It must be where they ship from. Maybe one warehouse is stuffed but the one closest to you doesn't have any and Dell won't pay to redistribute or ship further. FYI: I ordered on the 29th and it was shipped on the 29th. Usually, my Dell orders go like yours.
