EDIT: Ok, basically I have to say that this is all thanks to the JumpOnDeals.com website Hot Deals page except that they list the final price as $88.06, there was no free next-day shipping involved (maybe an error?), and you didn't have to add anything to reach the $100 mark. So, it seems that maybe Dell has lowered the price on the drive.

I just ordered the Lite-On 40x/12x/48x CD-RW burner from Dell for $80.55 shipped next business day. I'm not sure if it is an error or not, but here's what I did. From the JumpOnDeals.com website, there was a message on the left in the "Last 5 Deals Clicked" section about ordering the drive for just $88.06 through Dell Home and Office. This was done using a $10 off $100 coupon, and an extra 10% off coupon (expires 4/29/02). Of course I'm not going to mention the actual codes here--if you surf to the JOD website you can find them there. Anyway, the actual link at the JumpOnDeals.com website which will bring you to the appropriate spot on the Dell website is http://www.jumpondeals.com/redirect.php3?cid=6859. Once you use that, search for item A0011904. This is the Lite-On drive which you add to your cart. Problem is the drive is just $99.95, so the $10 off $100 coupon was not a possibility. So I searched around, and found a $0.66 Imation 80 min/700 meg CD-R (Dell part no. 595807-4), and added that to my cart to bring the total to $100.61. Then, I was able to add the $10 off $100 and extra 10% off coupon listed at the JumpOnDeals website. This removed $20.66 from the total, leaving it at just $80.55. Then, when I went to pick shipping after specifying my zip code, etc., all shipping options (e.g. lowest cost ground 3-5 day, 2 business day, and next business day) came up as $0.00. So I obviously took the next business day option. Anyway, a few minutes later, I got first the order acknowledgement and then order confirmation by e-mail. The confirmation e-mail says that the order was processed, and that it will ship on or before April 22 once my credit card payment is authorized.

Anyway, maybe this $0.00 for any type of shipping is screwed up, but even if they ship it by ground for just $80.55, it seems like a decent deal. Hope some of you can also take advantage of this.

I'm gonna cancel my $88 one and save $8 bucks! Also I don't think the free next day shipping is an error. It's been like that for a few days at least. Thanks!

Before you go cancel your order just to save 8 bucks ask yourself how quickly do you want to get the drive....I ordered mine the 14th for $88 free next day shipping. Received confirmation that the order would ship the 17th, then today I got this...
We have reviewed your order # 8156XXXXX, and although we had anticipated
being able to ship your order sooner, we are experiencing an unexpected
delay. We will not be able to ship your order until 5/1/02. We apologize
for this inconvenience, and are doing everything we can to get your order
out to you as quickly as possible.
As always, you may cancel your order at any time prior to shipment by
calling 1-800-624-9897 ext. 66966 and we will promptly process a refund for
your order. Again, we apologize for any inconvenience, and will ship out
your order as soon as possible.

Thank you,
Dell software And peripherals

Now I hope I get the drive around the date before school ends...

Got the same delay notice this morning. Yesterday, I was told my order from the weekend had already entered the shipping process, and a refusal/RMA was set up and confirmed via email. Today, after receiving the delay notice, I just went ahead and cancelled the order, and cancelled the refusal/RMA. My head hurts from dealing with this company :Q

My 2 other Lite-On 40x drives from 4/9 orders are apparently going to arrive tomorrow.

Instead of adding the $0.66 cd-r, just add a $0.05 screw to bring it to $100 even. Apply the coupons and it should come to $80.01 delivered. Just my $0.05.

also dont haveto mess with coupons and dell's notorious customer service

My Thoughts exactly, i ordered my drive on the 15th, like everyone else, i guess there will be a delay for shipping my drive too, why the damn hell do they say it is in stock then.....what a pain in the a$s.....i ordered three packs of taiyo yuden fujis from dell last night at 8:00 and got them at 11:00 in the morning, so i guess if they have the stuff in stock then they would ship it immediatley. The fact that they cannot honour the person above who ordered their drive on the 14th because of a delay is downright ridiculous because not only did dell decrease the price of the drive, they say the drive is IN STOCK.....are they stupid or are they trying to get under the customers nerves????????...for such a big and prestigious company to do stupid things like this is really unfortunate...i got my dell system from them , the service for that was very good for the past two years.....but i guess the software and peripherals section is an entirely different kettle of fish. best of luck for people ordering this drive. initially i thought of returning the drive, but its not worth the extra torture and wait for an insignificant amount of 8 dollars.....so people who want to order after cancelling....please think twice abt it.!!!!!

the newegg deal will work out to 80 dollars....whereas the dell deal will work out to 88 for a faster drive at free fast shipping.... and people when u look at the 40X drive dont look at the damn burning speed only...data transfer and DAE are also better..whatever it is dell is definitley better than those greedy guys at newegg....newegg was very smart...they started a good publicity campaign with low priced stuff...now that they have a portion of the market their deals are no better than a zillion companies out there.......the only reason why i call them greedy b@stards is because they sell refurbished stuff for a very small discount. im sure they buy those for much much lesser.....but stupid teenage suckers are always there for those deals.

Dell... Fast Shipping? OK, take a breather, you're dellusional.

Unless you didn't read the part above that said the drives are already being delayed INTO MAY! I wouldn't consider that fast shipping.

32x - here, here
40x - here, here

JFYI, there will supposedly be a firmware update available in the near future, adding Mt. Rainier and P-CAV support.

The Lite-On drive supposedly (from the test reports) has
incredibly good DAE...better than the Plextor, even, and significantly
better than earlier drives like the 32-12-40.

I still worry that these Lite-On drives will turn out to be turkeys
in the long run...based on my experiences with earlier generation
Lite-On drives. But hey, for $90 for the 40x drive I'm in for
another shot...

One thing people forget is that if you buy one of these and expect
to use it for duping music CDs and expect to take advantage of that
40x write speed, you'll need to have a second high quality CD
ripper in your system. There aren't many CDroms up to the job.
Personally, I use a Plextor 40x SCSI drive, and does a good job
(but it seems that a second Lite-On 40/12/48 would be even better!! .

Oh, and that 32x drive at Newegg for only a few bucks less is a
NON-STARTER and doesn't even merit consideration: Slower writing,
slower DAE, not retail. What's the point? These days, I think Newegg
is mostly a sucker's bet.

Next day shipping showed up as $0.00. I guess they corrected it finally. So it was a mistake after all.

I ordered my 40x on the 13th for $88.

Today got a notice that it would not ship til May.

Then now got a notice that it shipped yesterday! lol.

Btw, to those who have this model, is it loud when burning? How loud and at what speeds?
