These seems like a great deal especially for people looking to up the cdrw speed from their current 10-12 to 24x rewrite....
Now I also have a question...does anyone know where to find 24x cdrw media? I've had a tough time finding it!

This is a great drive - at a good price for those people who don't want to wait on rebates. Plus, the drive can be overclocked to 52/24/52, if you desire. For example, a 700 MB CD can be burned in 2 minutes, 30 seconds @ 52x. That gives a new meaning to cookin' a disc.

There's a Buslink 48X which is supposedly a Lite-On under the hood @ Best Buy.

$69 - $35 (rebates) = $35 AR. Same drive, cheaper outcome.

In my opinion, yes. The 48x & 52x drive feature CAV - the disc gets written to at a consistant speed. The earlier drives (under 48x) didn't feature CAV, but would vary the write speed quite a bit as the laser moved across the disc. Plus, this 48x drive could be upgraded to a 52x burner with a firmware update.

I got my Cendyne 48x (Lite-On) for $30 back when OD had that $20 off $50 coupon and OM was putting an end to honoring OM's coupon on sales items. I had to put my foot down with an OM store manager...

So I'm guessing my 12x10x32x is a paper weight now. And to think I paid $155 for it. Geezzz

I would say very easily no.... Just wait for a bigger jump at least. You are talking about the difference between burning an entire CD in 3 minutes, or 2 1/2 minutes.

30 seconds is not worth the upgrade. Wait til a drive can burn a CD in 1 minute, and then upgrade... otherwise you are just wasting money.

I believe the 52x or 56x drives will be the "end of the line." Given the fact that moment will be soon approaching, I don't think we'll see 1 minute writes to disc. However, the 48x drive might support more features in addition to CAV as I mentioned above. If you want to use your CDRW as a slow hard drive - then, Mt. Ranier is the software to get. Your 40x Lite-On drive may not support this feature.

In another thread, many of us were purchasing 48x Memorex writers that could be flashed with the Lite-On firmware. We were getting these drives for $39.99 (after coupons and rebates.) Most CDRW drives are worth at least $20 - $40, so you could sell yours for $35.00 and then purchase the Memorex for a 'net' cost of $5.00. $5.00 would be a small amount of money for the additional features that you would unleash.

I was hoping since most everyone got deals on beige or white flavored CDRW's maybe we'd see some deals on black faced units. I refuse to pay $15 for a black bezel when I only paid $19 for the drive. As far as painting goes...it's nearly impossible to do a nice job without getting the drive bay out. Any thoughts?

The 40x lite-on can be flashed to a 48x with CAV and Mt. Ranier just as easily as the 48x can be flashed to a 52x. Unless you have a need for the fast RW speeds, and can don't mind paying for the 24x RW discs, the incremental speed increase of a 40x flashed to 48x compared to a 52x drive isn't worth it IMHO, especially since media quality starts becoming an issue at those speeds. I'd rather pay $0.10 or less per disc than spend twice that or more to save 60 seconds per burn. It's not like you can't surf the web or something else while it's burning anyway.

For those who don't care about RW speeds Office Max has Verbatim 48x12x48 for $29.99 after $30 MIR.

I play CDs from my 40x liteon (flashed to 48x) in a Sony DVD changer, my stock Audi CD changer in my car, an old ('86) Sony single disc CD changer, and I also burn MP3's onto CDs that are played on a Panasonic DVD changer that has MP3 capability. No problems in any of them.

I do occasionally have issues with media though. I have hundreds of blanks that I've aquired over the years, often free after rebate. Almost all of it is cheap CMC stuff. I'm trying to work through the older stuff first... still burning 12x blanks I bought several years ago. I usually just burn at 16x or 24x just because it's not worth the bother to worry about whether or not the blanks can handle faster speeds. As I said before, I'm usually doing something else on the computer while I'm burning anyway, so the a couple of minutes of extra burn time doesn't really affect me. Just for kicks, I have burned some at higher speeds. I've had successful 48x burns with this cheap media, and I've had some fail too. But I almost ALWAYS max my 80 minute discs out to 82 minutes, so that certainly doesn't help.

Do you have to buy the 24x RW media to use this burner? Like the poster above, I have a ton of blanks that I don't want to just waste.

I have a 40x flashed to 48x. And 48x can be flashed to 52x. Does that mean I can flash my 40x (48x) to 52x? Anyone tried that? Thanks.

I'm not sure how accurate it is but there's an app at the LiteOn site called SmartBurn which is supposed to tell you how fast a particular disk can be burned.

As far as the question on the media... depends on if you're talking about CDRWs, or just CDRs. CDRs can often be burned at higher speeds than what they are labeled for. You simply have to try higher speeds until you reach the point that you start getting burn errors. But no go on CDRWs. They are coded with the speed they are rated at, and the burner reads that, and will only burn at that speed.

And on going from 40x -> 48x -> 52x, no. The reason why you could flash the 32, 40, and 48x drives to the speeds of each other is because they all use the same chipset. They are basically the same hardware. But the newer drives (generally the ones that have 16x RW speeds or higher) are a newer chipset, and can only be flashed between other models of the same chipset.

Is this really a good 'sale' price for the OEM? Only $4 cheaper than the regular price for Retail drive.
