I went with a $60 52x24x52 Black Plextor from newegg.com as a replacement I ordered today. I may have to swing by CC and get one of these lite-on's as well for my backup rig.

Yeah that is what i plan on doing, but dang.... did anyone look at those online rebates??? They look so sketchy that I could have designed them in Windows Paint....

i got this on thursday night. the shelf was full of them. had ordered from BB, but it was backordered. went back yesterday, taking the BB email order confirmation to CC and they 110% pricematched ($70 at CC before rebates, $60 at BB before rebates). this will cost me $3.99 + $3.54 tax when i get the rebate checks.

they're supposed to go print those out for you. Whenever that happens with my customers i have to go find the rebates and print them, and if i can't, then it's an instant rebate. So just FYI, if the rebates don't print, ask them to print them. It's part of our job to do that.

Got one today too. Was just about to order from Newegg but couldn't pass this up.

FYI, you may need to flash firmware. Mine had a date of July 2003. It had firmware 306 and would only do 24x max.
Flashed to 309 and now get 52x sweetness!

I was wondering about that. Nero said my max speed was 32x -- wasn't sure why. Flashed to the latest bios and now it says 52x (although my machine reports the bios number as QS09). Thanks for the tip!

finally gave in and got 1 because of the great price. i figured my TDK 32x would eventually die, so i got it as my backup. the same night i was trying to burn something, my TDK wouldn't burn at all. this gave me the perfect excuse to replace the drive with the new drive. Burn a few things that night and everything worked great.

lite-on uses smart-burn, which stores media information on the firmware, and reference that to do the burn job. maybe your media wasn't in the QS06 firmware, that why you got only 24x MAX

I'm not sure that ANY drive that spins to 52x is going to be exactly quiet. I have this drive and while it's action is quite smooth, it does make some jet sounds when spinning up to read a disk...all normal...

The drive is not quiet at all. Don't think any drive spinning at 52x will be quiet.

ditto, $25 received but still waiting on the $30.

About, the drive being quiet, you can set the max drive speed with one of the Nero programs so it only goes up to say 24x if you want to quiet it down.
