No experience myself, but my dad has been using a 2x Lite-On BD drive for months now and hasn't reported any major issues and he uses it quite a bit to watch BD movies.

Why? Does Lite-On not release firmware for their drives to keep them up to spec?

i have one of these, works fine... what was weird is that the enclosed powerdvd sw downloaded a complete replacement for the sw that almost seems to be specifically for this drive...

Some reviews say it comes with software and others don't. I assume no, which begs the question of how much and what kind of software is needed to use this drive to display movies? And also wondering what is the difference between this drive and the three other Liteon drives on Newegg all selling for similar prices?

I do not believe it comes as a bare drive. I did buy many DVD drivers and mostly OEM packaged but always came with software. Unfortunately I jumped in LG BD burner deal, so this deal appeared too late for me. This deal is half price what I paid for LG so I feel jealous.

will these types of drives upscale non blu-ray discs ?

upscaling is being done by software. The drive has nothing to do with it.

I got this drive 4 weaks ago and I install it, I patched my windows Xp because the software doesn't work without Xp pack3. I got no problem so far and I watched a few movies like Predator and is awesome.....
