Searched for the answer, didnt find it, so here goes...

Newegg lists two Lite On 48/12/48 burners... the only difference I can seem to find (and I may have just missed something) between them is the part numbers, one is LTR-48126S and the other is LTR-48125W. I'm building a new PC for a friend, and I would like to know which one to get. TIA

there are two methods of burning which really doesn't matter but one is just different than the other and maybe that is the difference. no matter.

Forget the first 3 responses to your request - doesn't anyone care to look for the facts anymore? Or, do people just like to post meaningless "one-liners" for the sake of posting?? Here's what I found in another forum:

If you're looking to make backups of your protected games, yes, I recommend it. You don't specify which model you're looking at. That is the LTR-48125W or LTR-48126S. With the 48126S it might be possible to OC to 48x24x48x, or 52x24x52x, as it is based on the Mediatek "6" chipset. I don't own one of these, so I can't say for certain. I believe others on these forums have been successful. Either way, both are capable of handling most of the copy protection schemes.
Based on the above, go for the LTR-48126S writer.

hmm
maybe one supports cav (constant angular velocity burning) on just one speed (probably 48x) and the other supports cav on all speeds?

i havent found any evidence in my somewhat speedy search through google.ca but maybe....

also i rememebr hearing about flashing another older model (40x drive) with 48x rom (kind of overclocking in a way) mayeb this one supports it also (the "s" model....the one wiht the s at the end of model number)

//edit
guess i was beaten to the punch

Well, it just became a moot point, as Newegg now lists the Lite ON LTR-4824S (the 48/24/48) for all of $1 more.

Personally, you could save yourself $20 - get the 48Maxx Memorex (48/24/48) drive from Staples for $39.99 (after $20 rebate and a $10 coupon.) The Memorex drive is definately a Lite-On drive. I just flashed mine with the Lite-On firmware this morning to make it a 52/24/52 drive. Again, $39.99 - and your local Staples store should have it in stock.

Is that an instant rebate? The friend that I am building this for hates MIR, so if that is the case, its a no go.

EDIT: Oh, how does this Lite On drive do as far as copying protected disks? Everytime my friend gets a game, he copies it (when he can), then plays with the copy only.
