Question for all the firmware guru's out there, I picked this up today and was surprised to find a "new" Lite-on drive ver #ldw-451s inside. There is very little about this drive on the net, however I did find a couple european sites that hint this drive may have the same chipset as the 8x lite-on drive. If you find any links to info regarding flashing the firmware ect (no firmware at all for this drive on lite-on's site) Please post them up

Thanks

Regarding FX5200 vs. BB ATI 9600np:
My friend got the former and I got the latter; with a P4 1.8Ghz w/ 512 DDR, he benched ~8fps on Game 2 of 3dMark2003 on 1024x768 max detail no AA etc. etc. (default settings)
with my 1.3 Ghz AMD thunderbird and 640 mb SDR, I got about 17 fps.

my $0.02.

Is this the same Liteon drive that was on sale during the Black Friday sale? If so, it's the same price as it was on Black Friday. I don't seem to remember deals like this in the previous years. Usually, the holiday prices don't touch the Black Friday prices.

Just think how all the poor saps who got up at 3:00 a.m. and went and sat out in the cold the friday after thanksgiving are going to feel when they see this. Glad I wasn't one of them.

Furthermore what if these drives turn out to be a newer revision which might perhaps be flashable to 8x. While the drives sold on Black Friday may not be. That would make those folks feel really screwed now wouldn't it.

It kind of pisses me off that Best Buy is offering this drive again for this price.

Has anyone noticed that some of the boxes are now sealed with a round, clear seal? I bet these are the newest drives. None of the 52x cdrw drives had this seal, but half of the dvd+/-RW drives did. I grabbed the drive with the seal because I know that Liteon didn't use to do this.

It has been unscientifically determined that if the sixth # in the serial is an 8 it will be an LDW-451S and as Salvador stated the first clue is a round clear sticker sealing the box.

Gracias!

Here is what they have listed, but I don't know if any of the prices are considered "good or great". It's BB after all. HTH.

JVC GRD9OUS $500
Samsung SC-D23 $400
Sony DCRTRV70 $1300
Sony DCRTRV22 $700
Canon OPTURA 20 $800
Canon ZR60 $379 ($50 Gift card available by mail)

All say "Before savings", but it doesn't tell you what those savings are.

Those look like their standard prices, so unless the "after savings" part gets pretty good, not hot. That sucks too, as I really want to get a Canon Optura 20.

Hey Prime,

check your local BB. I was hesitant to go to the store this morning because i thought there was no good deal on camcorders. But i ended up getting the sony TRV33 for 663 (very likely the optura you like is about the same price) plus the 2-year 0% financing. CC sells this model for 750 & a 12 mo. 0% APR.

At first, i wanted the Elura 50 (which is 616 bux) but i opted to get the sony since it has more features plus i already have a bunch of Memory stick. I should have check the optura also, oh well.

I did it. However, the CC rebate form clearly states that "CC reserves the right to reduce the fulfilled rebate amount based on price adjustments and/or price matches made on qualifying items.

I hope my rebate comes in though.

Thanks.

***Total = $9.99 (After $50 MIR)***

i just got one of the 52X burners at CC... tried to get the pricematch and they said no, it is the same price after rebates... THEN, he came back and said OK, this is what we can do... i will give it to you at our price minus the $20 and not give you the rebate for CC, just the mfg. rebate... i said OK!! so i got it for $49.99... maybe i will get the rebate form online and try to send it in anyway... that would make this baby free for me

On Sunday I went to Circuit City to PM the LiteOn DVD burner, the lady at customer service didn't want to PM the Best Buy after rebate price of $80, but a manager walked by and asked if there was a CC rebate on the LiteOn, she said no, he say he would going and check for a rebate, then he called her and said to go ahead and do the PM at 110%, so my total was $72.99 +taxes, as I was walking out the door the lady called me back saying a rebate was printing out, she handed me the $30 rebate form saying "I would tell if you would". $72.99 - $30 MIR = $42.99

YMMV on doing this at your local CC, but you can try. Even if they want to add on their $30 rebate to the price of the PM it's still cheaper than buying at BB.

TIA,

Just did the BB PM at CC for the DVD burner. They gave me the PM but they factored in the CC $30 rebate first. The "110% protection" ended up saving me $4 (the CC price was reduced $40 from $149.99 to $109.99 and then to $105.99 with the extra 10%) compared to BB. Also, there will be slightly less sales tax.

So it goes like this:

$149.99 - $44 (110% of the difference between CC's after rebate price and the final BB price) -$30 CC MIR = $75.99 (plus tax on $105.99)

I don't know if this is becoming Standard Operating Procedure at CC but, the CSR printed out a copy of my receipt even though I handed him my copy. The important, and troubling, thing here is that when he prints out a copy of the receipt, the rebate(s) print out too! This is a way for them to tell if a item has any rebates associated with it.

Well.. If the 5200 is a PCI card, the 9600 would probably have to be a better card because it's AGP. I didn't know that they still made PCI cards, especially PCI gaming cards.

Sal

If they stop making PCI video cards, the company I work for would go out of business. We depend on having at least 4 displays per each computer.

There's always the upgrade market, for those that bought PC's with "integrated video", and have no AGP slot, and now want to upgrade their gaming performance. (Think about the people that bought name-brand systems, that contained low-cost OEM-integrated motherboards, usually with onboard video. There's definately an upgrade market there.)

Anyway, with enough RAM onboard the card to hold the entire level's textures, etc., the difference between PCI and AGP doesn't matter all that much. DVD playback might suffer with a PCI card though.

The 5200 isn't a great gaming card though, it's like the "MX 200" of the GF FX series. A Radeon 9000 or 9500 Pro PCI would be a better choice, IMHO.
