My Lite-On DVD-R/RW drive is a LDW-451S model not a LDW-411S that it is supposed to be. Over here there is some discussion about the differences between the 411S and the 451S. Some think the 451S uses a newer chipset that might be able to do 8x. There is also a lot of discussion about this on FW here.

In the FW thread there is discussion on how to ID which drive is in the box. It seems that if the 6th digit of the serial nummber is an 8 and if the box tab is sealed with one of those clear plastic disks, then your chance of getting a 451S is high. In addition to those two features, mine has a manufactured date of Nov. 03.

I have one of those. Haven't opened it yet though because it has a seal on the box. From what I read over at the link you provided, someone tried to flash it to the 8x drive and it went dead on him.

Best Buy has the burners back in stock for 129.99 less $50 in MIR. There's also a $20 gift certificate offer - if you spend over $200 at best buy (check your email or the usual suspects). Buy the burner, a 50 pack of Memorex DVD + or -R on sale for 49.99 and something else for a little over $20 and get the $20 gift cert.

I got two surge protectors, $5 each out the door, what a deal. Also got the 50 pack of Made in Japan Fuji CDRs.
I didn't look around the store much but I did notice that the Lite-On DVD burners were sold out on the shelf. I didn't care though since I don't need one yet.

Just an FYI not all of the new boxes with the clear sticker are indicative of getting the LDW-451s. Nor does haveing a manufacture date of nov.03. I purchased mine yesterday ( LDW-411s) at BB after a failed attempt at a price match from CC. ... location - Shrevport, LA. There was only 2 left that I could find, niether of which had an 8 in the s/n. which may or may not determine the the type of drive you recieve. CC by the way had plenty left.

Cool, I am going to try and pick one of these Lite-On DVD burners up tomorrow. I will try to get a PM at CC and then I will battle the crowds at BestBuy if all else fails.

I agree the sticker is almost irrelevant as is the build date by themselves. The "8" in the S/N seems to be the determining factor. I picked one up on Monday, had the sticker, Nov. '03 build, no "8" and was a 411S. Returned it as non-working on Tuesday after I found a box with the "8" in the S/N, and it did have the 451S inside. The "8" seems to be the key.

The sticker is an aid to ID the boxes. If you don't like little detailed tips to assist you in your search, then so be it.

When I stated that my box had the sticker (I was the first to mention this in this thread) and contained the 451S model, I also stated that it contained an 8 in the sixth digit spot in the s/n and that is had a Nov 2003 mfg date. I was trying to give a complete discription of the package. I think the sticker is relevent in that the 451S models all have the sticker. Yes, some non-451S models also have the sticker, but if you need to scan a number of boxes on the shelf, you can, quickly, rule out the boxes without the sticker.

Read my post again........I said ALMOST, not completely. The most relevant portion is the S/N, then the mfg. date. The seal came about some weeks ago with the new shipments of the drives, which makes it almost completely irrelevant. The one I picked up on BF had the clear seal but had a 411S inside, which is why I made that comment. Yes, I sat outside BB for the BF sales.......picked up the laptop and eMachines computers......made a nice profit off each a few days later.

Something can not be "ALMOST" irrelevant. Also, it can't be "...almost completely irrelevant." It's either relevant or not.

Your statement:

"Yes, I sat outside BB for the BF sales.......picked up the laptop and eMachines computers......made a nice profit off each a few days later."

IS irrelevant.

Would you like to continue...

I did not intend for my post to start an argument among members. I did so only to inform of my experience.

I did use your tips btw and I thank you, however I mentioned that I only had two with which to choose from and niether had the "magic 8" in the s/n. Otherwise I would have picked one up insted of the one I did.

I went to BB with the intention of buying this burner regardless of which model I was about to get ... as this is still a good deal (imo). The new model would have been a bonus, but untill the 451s can be proven to be that much better or for that matter flashable to an 8x, I will be happy with my purchase.

Did the 110% price match to BB. How can you beat a $10 CDRW?!

***Total = $9.99 (After $50 MIR)***

so you sent the receipts that showed no PM to CC and then you went back to PM?

this is a big YMMV and not bulletproof

No. I sent the rebate receipt that showed the $69.99 purchase price. I used the real receipt that I keep to do the PM. It's NOT that YMMV, unless you get a CC rep that looks at the final after rebate price that wants to argue with you.

are we certain that the 451 is better than the 411 when flashed??

My BB has plenty of them, lots with 8's and lots without, and I have a few hours left of this deal and I think I'll get one, I think I would almost prefer the old one since everyone raves about it when flashed to the most recent firmware.

Any comments would be great, I'll go check around some more and post if I find anything.

They also have 50 memorex DVD+R or DVD-R for $50,

are these good, who makes them?

When the 451 was flashed it killed it.. so no.. you probably don't want to flash it.

i c, they print out rebate receipt, that's cool but it is a YMMV as you said yourself, CC rep might look at the final after rebate and argue, so you would have to either go to another CC store to PM again or whatnot, basically it's not bullet proof and deal will vary

Just got the LDW-451S at the Glenway Avenue store in Cincinnati, open 1 more hour, serial number starts with 429348.

Also got 50 Memorex DVD-R's for $50 without rebates, not bad.

They had lots left, some with the 8 in the serial number like mine, others without. Hopefully the 451S is as good or better than the 411S.
