One spec that i can't seem to fin with dvd-rom drives is it's dvd ripping speed, not digital audio extracion but how fast dvd-decrypter will extract the disc onto hard drive.

my sony dvd burner takes 35-45 minutes per disc (2x according to decrypter)

I hope other drives can do it shorter.

most drives can do it shorter, it's the dvd burners that always do it slower. 8x-10x is the norm.

My Lite-on 166 DVD-ROM is a fast ripper. For single layer disks, it sometimes gets as high as 16X rip speed toward the end of the rip. For dual-layer, it might get to 8X speed. This thing is also a very fast audio CD ripper. Newegg has these for fairly often in the refurb section, $23 plus free shipping. I got two like this in the past month.

With the 166 it takes 15 to 20 minutes to rip a full dual layer disk. Single layer disks rip faster, sometimes reaching the 16X limit of the drive.

Yeah I have the 166 also, it's about an inch shorter than an average drive too if you're tight on space (like a Shuttle) and is known to be one of the best rippers.

I find it takes about 20mins on average to rip, never got more than 12x though I don't think....

$25+5 is not a good deal for the 163 though I'd say.

Check out digi.rpc1.org for a way to make it region free in Windows (doesn't need firmware flash).

That's because most burners (inlcuding the Pioneer A05) are firmware limited to ripping at 2x thanks to the MPAA. Look for modded firmware on rpc1.org forums, thanks to them, my A05 can rip at 12x

Maybe this is a silly question, but does anyone know if either of these drives has any problem reading DVD+R? I know the specs mention DVD+RW but they don't say anything about DVD+R...

doesn't look like there is a mod to increse rip speed on a 500ax, but there is for a 510a (oem?)

may have to pick this lite-on reader
