isnt plextor one of the first guys out with the new technology? everyone seems to be coming out with newer products before them. thats strange. i always thought they were the first. and basically im a all plextor man. no if ands or buts. i stick with a product ive come to know and love, plextor. but where is it? the 32x cdrw? i have a 24x right now, and basically to upgrade to a 32 wouldn't mean much to me. it'll just shorten like what, few seconds? but just to have bragging rights, i would buy it. so where is it???

Lite-On has it, but I wouldn't trust them. BTW, if you have a Yamaha 24x, don't bother upgrading. It's faster than a 32x burner!

. . . what's wrong with Lite-On? I've heard nothing but good reviews of their drives starting with their 16x10x40 models.

Basically, they're the cheap brand. Rebranded reject drives that are "adequate" for speedy audio and data storage, but not backup.

I'm not going to bother with 32x drives. As stated, a few seconds isn't worth it, not to me anyway. Bragging rights only last a few weeks any more it seems.

I just ordered a 24x Lite-on. For the price, what the hell? If it turns out to be a good, reliable drive as most people say, great! It was a bargin. If it turns out to be not so hot, I'll use it for occasional burning and get a new Plextor. For only $89 shipped it's worth the try.

I'll never, NEVER!!!!, again buy a Yamaha drive. I paid around $400 for my 4416s when I first got it and it was a major POS!! Burns that wouldn't read, picky as all hell on media, and it died quick!! I replaced it with a Plextor 8x20 which I still am using. I know a few friends that had the exact same problems with Yamaha drives. So they're not for me. That's why I'm willing to spend $89 on a new drive just to see how it is. It's still a lot cheaper than when I bought "one of the best" and it turned out to be crap.

Ha, I'm not going to pay a lot more for the same speedyness and reliability of LiteOn... So what if plextor is seen as the best of them all, if it's about $40 cheaper, I'll go with the cheaper model, because I know LiteOns have been heavily recommended.

I've got one, I've put one in someone else's computer, and it's fine.

I think you're just rich and like to pay too much for almost the same product.

I used Yamaha TDK and Liteon and the TDK was the best, probably Plextor takes more time to insure quality rather than quantity like the Liteon does,
My next drive will be either a Plextor or TDK, no more Liteons for me.
I have the 24x and as said before, you pay for what you get.

No offense guys but these forums used to be about what is the best, nowadays it seems to be
about what is the cheapest. Personally I go for the best because I know it's going to last and I
know it's going to work. I believe that you get what you pay for! So here's a vote for Plextor and
a big thumbs down for lite-on.

Liteon drives are cheap? Hah funny guy, you mind telling me which cdrw drives can do safedisk2 properly.... liteon and the pricey plextor.
The liteon 24x is THE ide cdrw to have, while the plextor is THE scsi cdrw to have.

There's nothing wrong with Lite-on CD-RW drives. They work fine and sometimes may work even better than the competitor's. They recommended a lot because they have a good price to performance ratio.

And they're pretty reliable too. I've had my 16x for quite a long time and no coasters.

lol...

I've had a 40x liteon cd-rom for 2 years no problems. A little noisy, but damn dependable.

I have a 24x liteon burner and I can tell you it's going to be another drive like my HP (lasted well over 2500 cd burns)

There's nothing wrong with Lite-On, and it has nothing to do with the cheapness. All prices aside, Plextor and Lite-On are the top 2 brands. Both work great, both have great reputations. Throw in price. Lite-On happens to be really inexpensive. Lite-On r0x

Plextor is skipping the 32x models and going right for the throat with their upcoming 40/12/40 writer.. that's right, 40x CDR writing.

Yeah, as Draco said (I was surprised that no one mentioned this before him), Plextor has recently released thier 40x CD-RW (this week, I think). Also, both TDK and Lite-On have just released 32x drives. The LiteOn became available on 12/24/2001, and I saw the TDK 32x VeloCD in stores starting last week.

BTW, for those who praise TDK and down LiteOn, as far as I know (and I am pretty sure about this), the 24x TDK VeloCD was a LiteOn drive!!! I currently own the 24x VeloCD and am VERY happy with it (got it for $60 after markdown and two rebates when Best Buy and Circuit City were phasing it out for the incoming 32x). Also, I am a proud owner of the LiteOn 16x/48x DVD-ROM drive with DAE ripping at up to 40x!

Ok, I've calmed down now, but honestly, LiteOn is good quality, IMHO.

Specs on the 40x CDRW Drive from Plextor. MSRP is like $209. So I would expect to see them beloew 2 bills..

*Cries* ... I paid $500 (yeah five hundred) for my 8/20 Plextor writer when they first came out. How stupid. Of course I also paid $250 for a Sound Blaster AWE 32 PnP... and $200 a piece for 128mb HSDRAM from Mushkin. I could go on Seems like PC gear has really come down in the past year or two.

I think I'm just going to get the $80 Lite-On 24x for my new machine

Lite-On is "great" the same way the Apex 600A DVD player with the
hidden menus for turning off macrovision and region restrictions
was/is "great": It's a cheap device with some features people want.
Build quality is less than stellar. Good price for the features. Not
a great piece of equipment.

If you don't plan/want to upgrade your burner again anytime soon, I'd
go with ANY brand over Lite-On...Consider Lite-On, and the stuff
you write with it, disposables...If you understand that, the Lite-On
is a good deal...

I am a Plextor believer. Yes I bought my Plextor 4X 12X CDR (Not CDRW) SCSI - External for over CDN$700, 3 years ago. It is still working fine and still happy with it. Even burn PSX nicely . Before the plextor I owned a HP4020i, and that is a JUNK. If you're going for the long term buy plextor (LONG TERM: Defined as, you will not be greedy for faster burners in the next 2-3 years). If you want to be on top technology (Speed wise), get something like LiteOn.

Quality: Plextor still has it.

I paid CDN$500+ for a Logitech Pagescan that DOES NOT WORK IN Win2K/Xp. Go figure.

I have a Plextor 12x/10x/32x and was moderately happy with it. Had some minor issues with it, but it burned ok. It's still sitting in my old computer. I just got the 24x Lite-On black and am very please with it. for $80 ($91 after tax/shipping from Newegg) it's damn good!! And it comes with Nero. It's sitting in my new XP1800 computer. I'm not looking back to Plextor.
