Hmmm, I just ordered it from NewEgg to upgrade from my Teac 4x4x32 drive. Good to see a review on a drive I'll be getting in three days.

So is this the best 40 on the market right now? Does it overtake the plextor? When will the 48x be coming out? Will these backup discs that the plextors cannot?

Read the review, 3 minutes using CloneCD? That's a steal, that and it will burn anything without errors. Now I wish I could upgrade the shipping on it to get the drive sooner.

If you people want once I get it I can post my results (ie full burn time for 700MB CDs, etc).

Don't Expect any notable speed increases for at least a year. 40x is pushing the ATA/33 standard considering the state of most "common" PCs. 48x-52x is about as fast as they'll go until serial ATA or CD-ROMs start to support ATA/133/100/66. My personal opinion is that 52x is very fast. What really needs work is them DVD burners. Standards all messed up and slow speeds, regardless of how much data it holds. The only way DVD-Burners will ever take off is if they can burn a 9gb disc in 5 minutes. Then everybody that can possibly afford them will get one. Besides, CD-ROM burners in the future will only be used for Audio CDs. DVD Burners are sure to be very common within the next 2 years if they can get that whole standard thing straightened out.

Slawsk, they have ironed out the standards this is an old article on it on CNET They're going to leave the old 4.7 GB single 9.4 GB double sided current burners in the past, these ones are going to hit 30 GB or so and are less than one year away, prolly 2 if you take into account the high introductory cost, but who knows?

If i pick one of these up, what are the best cds to get. The article said that the fujis didnt work very well. Would anything around a 32x work? Say 32x tdks?

I am upgrading from a 12x plextor, so i should see a nice imporvement of about 4 minutes....

So Lite-On has finally created a drive that can compete with the Teacs for seek times.

Anyways, if I were in the market, I'd stick with a 32X and save the $$$. Maybe 24X if you're really short.
