Is the 811s worth the extra 50 bones? It is only adding 4X to the +R side of the house. From my reading here -R media is the way to go. They both burn -R at 4X. What to do? Buy it or not?
1. how much burning will you do?
2. do you want to spend a little more to future proof you for oooooooooooo 6months LOL
3. check out mwave they have nec nd2500's for 150~ or so and it does 4x and 8x both + and - formats
Ok Now you got me looking at the NEC 2500a. The only thing I see now is it's only a 32X CDR. What is the best DVD burner out there? So far the NEC has it in my book. 8X -R+R
I recommend the Plextor 708A (internal) or 708UF (external). The Plextors are considered the best in all the reviews and shootouts that I have read on the net. That is what I bought and I love mine. Also, DVD +R is considered the better format. -R is an older technology, and is more widely accepted, but +R is only a few % behind it in compatabilites. Here is a link to some good info:

From my own personal experience, my suggestion would be for you to avoid the 811s. I bought one a couple of weeks ago, and even with the latest firmware that was the pickiest damn drive I've ever used when it came to media. I returned it for a Pioneer DVR-A06 and it has worked great! Good luck!
