What do you think about Liteon? Are they just an optical disk OEM? Do they sell their drives to be rebagged? Which companies rebag their drives? What about the lables on their drives? They don't even place their name anywhere!

What about their drives? Are they on the same level as things that you buy from a "Close-Out" store? Do they just work for a while, and then fail?

Comments are welcomed

Considering how well my Lite On drive works and for what I paid for it, I don't care if the thing was made in Bangkok by a monkey...why are you trying to dig up dirt on something that isn't a problem?

On a semi-related note, does IO Magic make their own drives? I have two 16x DVD drives from them, but one is a Lite-On LTD 163, and the other is a "DVSKOREA."

Captain Obvious to the rescue! Think about it for a second. You just answered your own question.

I bought my lite-on 12x10x32 about a year ago and I have only made 3 coasters out of about 60. But i know for a fact those were cause by software, and not the drive.

It realy is a great drive. and it doesnt rattle around like my regular CD-ROM drive

I also thought it wierd they dont put their name on it. but who cares. it was inexpensive and high quality. from talking to people with more mainstream brands (like you find retail) Im guessing its VERY high quality. they all make tons of coasters.

LITEON Conspiracy!!!

Take a deep breath...everything will be ok...

LITEON has been making drives for the OEM market for over a decade. They know what they're doing, and their drives are solid products.

Sorry, my server was down.

The primary point of this discussion was to find the real truth behind Liteon by asking everyone for a piece of the puzzle. Here is mine:

Some of the known rebaggers of Liteon drives are:

IO Magic
Pine Technologies
Bus Link
Cendyne

Anymore? Does anybody know the difference between the "163" and the "163-D"? Please help this database.

what?...it's common that companies outsource products to be manufactured by other companies...big deal

maybe lite-on outsources thier drives to tampax, who in turns manufactuers liteon's drives and tampons and rebadges them as liteons - even packages them in liteon boxes for them, then ships them out to liteon to sell.

the reason they may not be placing their name on their products is because, if they are outsourcing (probably), then its simply easier to have the other manufactuer make them without having another die for molding liteon on the case...it's cheaper...hence their drives are dirt cheap.

they function well from what i've heard, and some indonesian kids making nike shorts aren't being paid to make liteon drives, so i don't see any problem with liteon...

The IBM desktops we have at work uses Lite-On CD drives. Leads me to believe that IBM bought un-badged drives and stuck it in their machines. As someone else mentioned, they catered to the OEM companies until they decided market their products to the public as well.

Why not take a peek at the company's history here

If you look at the top of the drive it says Liteonit Corp.
So in reality the do mark their drives.
Another company that uses their drive is Hi Val

How much pr0n and "software backups" does one really need in any given year?

Nortexoid on a serious note, I just looked at an email that a friend of mine got about tampons .. apparently they are very bad for a woman's health. This particular email accused tampax of using esbestos (sp?) in their tampons. I was wondering if you could confirm this for me. Not a joke either BTW, this really happened today.

"The real truth"?? Someone give the X-files producer a call and tell him to book another season with this guy writing the conspiracy theory plots.

You want the truth? They make kick ass drives. They sell their drives to other manufactures to rebadge and sell (same as plextor and other companies have done).

I'm still missing the conspiracy here?

whoa! - serious not?...i'm not sure if i can cope...

but i'll try, so here's your answer

"i don't know"

I don't work for tampax, so...i'm sure that they have to pass certain regulations and putting asbestos in their genital care products doesn't sound like test-passer...unless you're renting your uterus out as a warm winter bachelor pad...in which case, insulation helps.
