I was watching little league highlights, since the buzz around San Diego is that a local team (Chula Vista) has a great chance of going all the way. I look at the highlights, and wtf are the kids spitting after every play for? They do all these mannerisms that imitate players in the MLB. wtf? Just play and have fun; don't act like showoffs just because you're on TV. What the hell are the announcers doing, comparing these kids to big league players?

I remember doing that kind of stuff when I played little league in my local town. Kids want to be like the ball players they see on TV, not a big surprise.

Did you ever play Little League? It's perfectly normal for a kid to imitate the pros.

You know it's interesting, I distinctly remember being in 6th grade sitting on the bleachers before soccer practice, and everyone else was spitting. I thought it was pretty gross, and pointless. I'm not sure if they were doing it to imitate anyone in particular, or if they were just doing it because spitting was a cool thing to do. FWIW, that was 20 years ago. I conclude that around the age of 11-12, boys go through a spitting phase.

I think I get what Dan is saying. Spitting isn't the problem though, it's basically that a lot of these kids get savvy to all the cameras. Which isn't cute.

Ever since ESPN expanded the coverage to show eleventy billion games, more of them are playing to the cameras, getting "interviewed" way too often (the only thing worse than pro athletes spouting sports cliches is incoherent pre-teens trying and failing to copy them), and generally not acting like innocent 12 year olds.

Just showing the final game on Wide World of Sports like they used to do was plenty enough for me. Back then, most of the kids were still oblivious to the TV cameras, or at least gave a deer-in-the-headlights look when they noticed one pointed at them. That was a huge part of the appeal to a TV audience.

I was watching a game yesterday and the kid pitching gave up to lead or something close to this. The coach ended up having a meeting on the mound and the kid asked if he could hit the next batter. The poor kid wanted to come out of the game but the coach made him play first.
