Hey all,

Firstly a little about my specs:

Intel Q9450
Asus P5Q Pro Intel P45 Motherboard
OCZ 4gb Ram
My case

Recently I've bought myself a Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro CPU Cooler and a 12cm Zalman ZM-F3 120mm Silent Case Fan
to replace my old stock cpu cooler and to just add a fan to act as a exhaust as the big fan attacked to my side panel blows air IN.

Problem is because the ram modules is so close to my cpu socket, I cant actually attack my Artic cpu cooler so the fan is facing the front blowing the air to the back of the case, I dont want to align the fan downwards as it would take all the heated air from my graphics card and blow it through the headsink, making it even hotter i guess? I can't align the fan up because the space between it and my PSU case is too small for the fan to gather much air for intake, so my only option is to align it towards the back of the case, so the air is blowing to the front of the case (past the Ram).

It seems reasonable at the moment, but the problem comes in when I attack my 12cm Fan to the back panel of the case. I do not want this fan to blow air in, mainly because it would blow dust straight into the arctic cpu cooler heat sink and because my case then won't have a exhaust fan at all (EDIT: actually found out i can just buy a fan air filter to avoid the dust goin in, but would it be wise to only have both fans as intake and no exhaust fans?). So this 12cm fan is acting as a exhaust. As you can imagine now the 12cm back panel fan and my arctic cooler fan is quite close (I'd say about 3 inches apart. Trouble is im worried as my back panel fan collecting air and is blow out heat one way (to the back, out of the case) and my arctic cpu cooler is collecting air also and blowing it the opposite wate towards the front of the pc. I imagine they'll be a little fight of air, and I fear some sort of pressure or static could build up from this. As it looks:

...........................|}.....<_ .. _>..........{|
12Cm fan blowing |}.........| |.............{|
Air out of case......|}.........| |.............{| Arctic Cpu Fan Blowing Air to front of Case
.........<----------...|}.........| |.............{| ----------->
...........................|}.........| |.............{|
...........................|}...... Air Flow..........{|

So a bit confused on if this is fine/safe or if any problems could build up, and if anyone can offer some advice on if it's ok, or if i need to make any adjustments on positioning.

Many Thanks!

That must be a poorly desgned motherboard then, cause my IP35 has tonnes of room...Do you have a front intake fan?....

I guess normal case thermals are designed to intake at the front and exhaust at the rear because the cpu area is closest to the rear and therefore easlier to exhaust hot air there instead of trying to create an airflow from the back to vent the hot stuff out the front.....

Just had a look at the board, it doesnt seem so close....

Can you change the fan from 92mm to 80mm...that would allow you to mount with hot air pointing towards the back?

Can you swap the RAM to the other DIMM banks, or are you using 4x1GB?
I had a similar issue with my build, where the Scythe Ninja eclipsed DIMM slot #4, but I managed to put it in #1 and 3 instead.

Anyway, perhaps you can swap that fan around and use it as both exhaust and CPU cooling. That's really how most passive heatsinks are run actually, they rely on the nearby exhaust fan to line up to evacuate the heat built up around the heatsink. I'm not sure if the ACF7 was designed to be remotely passive, but if you can't move your RAM, that's one alternative to try.

The other thing is to use another fan, either repositioning it, or getting a smaller/larger one and using other clips or methods of hooking it on in such a way so as to clear the RAM.

Point it so the air goes up... The air will get exhausted by the PSU and 120mm fan and cool your graphics card a bit. I don't think your CPU will die if the ambient temp is 4C higher...
