Anyone actually like them?

I hate live music cds, probably because of all the annoying people yelling, clapping, singing along, etc. I just want to hear the band playing, not the extra crap.

Edit: Or digital music

I like them when they do something different than the studio album. Otherwise, it's just an inferior album cut.

When I bought CD's I would almost always look for the live versions (except for stuff like NWA or electronic that would be horrible). It gave me a better sense of the band's talent and how fun the concerts were.

A Jimmy Buffet or Grateful Dead concert is/was fun. A studio recording session is not so fun.

I'm generally not a fan. I make an exception for Widespread Panic. Then again, I don't like live music in person either.

There is a big difference between musician's playing music (who are enjoyable to hear live or recorded live), and pop stars/entertainers (famous people associated with recorded music for marketing purposes). Both have their place and are enjoyed by different people for various reasons.

I like those who have a skill that they can actually demonstrate in person.

I like live CDs and DVDs. I remember going to Iron Maiden Power Slave tour and then they came out with record. I bought it the day it came out.

Eh seeing a band live is not always the same thing as a live album. Even live albums are typically touched up, and are not a true representation of the 'experience'.

Having recorded a few live shows over the years, I've found that a band can sound good through the board and out your set up, but a live album never sounds as good even though it is a true representation.

I tend to not like live albums, but I love to see live shows, the energy/atmosphere makes it that much better.

Depends on the CD. Sometimes the live performances are too sterile.
But when done correctly.... even if mixed a bunch, they still can have a ton of extra live energy.

have a nirvana unplugged and live album that are great. may have a couple other live band ones but don't really buy them, mainly sometimes as part of a gift collection when one of the disc will be a concert.

FTFY.

The number of really great live albums can be counted on both hands of a clumsy woodshop teacher. The number of truly awful ones is nearly infinite.

Considering the number of Live albums I've actually listened to I'm hardly in a position to argue this point. Many bands (especially these days) lack the ability to actually play their "music" outside a studio hence any live recording they make is going to suck.

I will say that of the live albums I own personally most are very good.

Nah. I reject them outright. Don't like the feeling I'm hearing a recorded performance. I'm into the music, not the stage show. Don't want crowd noise or that one missing instrument that made the track killer.

I have two live albums and didn't know they were at the time of purchase.
