I guess I'm just still in shock that alkemyst thinks that health insurance is an expense that goes up when you don't have roommates.

Maybe alkemyst is just used to having "roommates" that qualify him for "domestic partner" benefits. In fact, I'm starting to think he's hitting on you GodlessAstronomer. He's pretty sure you want to live with a bunch of guys and have a circle jerk. I think that's his way of hinting that you should ask him to move in.

I had roommates for 4 years after moving out and finally had enough, got my own 1 bedroom place and LOVED it but it was very expensive compared to having roommates.

Then of course 6 months into my first year living completely on my own my then girlfriend, now wife and I got more serious and she ended up moving in.

So I only had 6 months of my life living 100% on my own and it was a fantastic 6 months (not to imply I don't like living with my wife).

My only regret was not doing it a year sooner.

I have never lived alone, and am now almost 40. I yearn for it

I did the "move out and move in with girlfriend and get married" all in a row thing.

it's a good experience... I'll never understand those guys who can't cook/clean for themselves, iron their clothes properly, etc.

I went a little nuts the first time I lived by myself, though (which didn't happen until I was like 26). that first year by myself, I don't think I ever had clothes on while inside my apartment

sadly, this is most people's adult experience now. They don't learn to be self-sufficient anymore.

It's one relationship to the next, moving in with them and having roommates between.

After 3 or so times they end up married on average.

lol...you really doubt me that much.

I am sure if you just got out and tired you'd find out how easy it was too.

I never said I had a problem getting laid. Back in my single days I was a regular manwhore. Something about riding a riding a motorcycle that gets chicks wet.

I just see your constant bravado as a clue that you're really not as cool as you think you are. People who constantly brag about getting laid probably aren't.

Lol, telling the old "back in the day when I had a bike" story.

You really hate your life, so sad.

I never had a motorcycle. I have been with a few dudes chicks that did.

does your cancer insurance cover all kinds of insurance?
i only bought for lung and testicular cancer insurance because the rates among those cancers are the highest.

the policy that covers all kinds of cancer is $$$ around these parts.

Covers all, even skin cancer which most did not.

Also it's a cash 'reward' plan. It doesn't go to medical expenses, it's cut on discovery immediately to the policy holder.

The coverage I have was discontinued about 3-4 years after I bought my policy, but I am grandfathered in.

If you can afford it, even if you have to make sacrifices in other areas to do so, it is absolutely worth it. Having lived with all kinds of roommates, in all sorts of situations, I can say without hesitation that living alone beat all of those situations by a mile, even the ones that were amicable and saved me a lot of money.

Nothing beats having a space that is yours and only yours.

i live with my parents. im 23. please look down on me. it's not fun. but it's an asian thing i suppose. saving money. we had our 5 year reunion for HS a few months back and lots of people are still living at home... while working at big 4 accounting firms too. LOL.

i guess i can't really look down on you. i've got friends who are almost 30 who live with their parents. and yeah they are all asian. i mean some of these guys make 6 figures, have multiple cars but live at home.

I mean I like visiting my parents, but i couldn't stand living at home. I lived at home for something lik e6 months after college, and the minute i got a job that paid well enough i scraped enough money together to get a place with a coworker.

Now I live alone, and well. I think its all a progression. you move out of the house with roomates , then live alone. you generally do not want to go backwards, its always better the more independant you are.

then again thats just for some people. some of my friends seem to love living at home and well i guess they are happy plus they have this huge pile of money left over. But yeah I don't think those people ever quite really grow up.

being at home at 23 is hardly a problem esp if just out of college. If you aren't going to college then you need to figure living out .

Now if you are still there past 25 then I'd say that's a real issue esp if you have nothing major saved.

I know people that were 'staying home' still because of the housing crysis 5+ years ago...they were already mid 20ish and had nothing saved up short of a few thousand bucks for one of them.

Well it's a buyer's market out there now and those people are still at home with nothing to show for it. I really don't get it. If you are going to live at home at least save the 'rent check' each month. I bet they aren't even maxxing out their 401k's.

I'm still thinking about moving into my own place next year.

Benefits:
All of the things mentioned in this thread, I dont really need to rehash that. I want my own space and I'm tired of living with people that treat a house like a garbage dump. I either need to live with people that have exactly the same attitude as me towards a home (quite rare among mid twenties apparently) or live on my own.

Drawbacks:
Not sure I can afford the extra expense, at the least it would wipe out the amount I save every month. I am hoping for a promotion soon, but hard to bank on that.
Cooking for myself. Every night. I enjoy cooking in fact, I just dont like cooking for one. In fact I hate it. I do have a girlfriend, but it would be too soon to move in with her.
