Living alone - worth the cost?

In 6 months I'll finally graduate and if things go to plan I'll get a decent job. I badly want to live alone, I'm getting kind of tired of having roommates (even really great people get on your nerves after a while). Did you live alone straight out of university? The only issue is that it costs about twice as much as living with other people. I could save a lot more money by flatting with 2-3 students/fresh grads.

So what do you think? Worth it?

(I didn't give real dollar amounts because it's not really meaningful even from state to state, much less internationally)

Yes it is worth it. There comes a point in life where you have to live on your own or in the long run, live with a spouse. The roommate thing gets old because you have no privacy and having your own place is a huge sign of maturity to the lady folk (and other people).

Part of creating a solid, responsible persona is knowing that although it costs more to live on your own, you are man enough to take on the responsibility and cut costs where necessary to make it work. Which in the end, makes you a better person.

I want to live alone so badly

People I live with get on my nerves so much. Can't cook when I want. Forced to small talk. They're always home downstairs so I can't do shit.

Exactly the same thing here. It seems minor at first but I have been doing this for 4 years with various people and it's getting really annoying.

Sounds like good advice. Thanks.

I've lived with people my whole life, except for one year that I did have an apartment of my own. I loved it. I enjoyed coming home to an empty place and just cooking up some dinner, maybe watch a movie or a game and have no one bother me (or wake me up or keep me up by making noise). If you want social contact, you can go hang with friends or what have you but you always have that quiet place to return to and relax in.

I know some people that would not do well living alone because they get bored, lonely, or are codependent. If this is not you, you'll love living alone.

If you can afford it, it's awesome to live alone.

This.

I was with you on the first part, the second part, not really (it makes you a better person?). I see what you're trying to say, but I don't really agree with it as having a roommate can show you're responsible as well, and willing to sacrifice personal space.

When i moved out of the house at 18 I got a job with free housing(3 bedroom house) and 640 acres all to myself 9 months out of the year. it was maintenance for a summer camp if anyone cares. Anyway, living on my own was great. I highly recommend it.

i live alone.

pros: privacy.
i can walk around nekkid.
i can take a dump without closing the door.
i can play music as loud as i want, stay up as late as i want, come home anytime i want without worrying about waking up roommates.

cons: very expensive.
if you are dying and can't dial 911 to save yourself, you're screwed.

It obviously depends on the person. Some would go insane being on their own.

For me, the answer to "worth the cost?" was "Dear sweet god yes."
I moved off-campus after my second year at the university. First semester, I was in the freshman dorms. It was like being in a daycare center, except the toddlers were well over 100lbs, there was no one in charge, and I was fresh out of chloroform.
By second semester, I had enough credits, thanks to some carried over from a community college, to move to the upperclassmen campus apartments. It was a bit nicer - there was no more of the community bathroom, though it was still shared by all 4 people in the apartment. There were still loud parties upstairs, idiot roommates throwing up on the floor on occasion, and so on.

I found a place a few miles from campus, and I'm still there. It's quite nice; it's a well-divided building, which effectively has me renting my own house for the price of an apartment.

Verily, tis awesome.

Graduate student / GRA here, I live alone. My only buds that I would like to live with are at other universities. Privacy is nice and with my pay, it is easily doable. If I knew some good people that needed a place to stay, I would let them stay with me or I would move in with them as I like the idea of saving a good bit more money.

It's worth it to me, just my preference to be alone over a roommate. Moving out to my apartment this Wednesday.

Haven't necessarily ruled out taking in a roommate if one is interested, though. Especially this first year out of school, I could use a little extra cash. Need to be able to afford that car next March.

just out of college, I had the dream roommate situation.

I worked 4 pm - 12 am and my roommate worked 12 am - 8 am.

I'd be at work when he was waking up/getting ready for work and asleep when he was getting home and unwinding. likewise, he'd be asleep when I was waking up/getting ready and at work when I was getting home and unwinding. it was basically like we each had the apartment to ourselves at half the cost. we only overlapped a bit on our days off.

it all went downhill when he invited his wise and beautiful woman girlfriend to move in with him, but I'd jump back into a scenario like the original one in a second.

Just graduated myself. I have my own place now, and did for the last 2.5 years as well. I spent the first year in the dorms and the next semester living with a buddy of mine. My friend dropped out for a semester before starting again at another school, and while I was a little disappointed he left, that was all the time I needed to realize that I needed to live alone. I spent the last 2.5 years in a tiny, shitty studio apartment so that I could afford to live alone, now that I have a job, it's a nicer one room apartment. Worth every penny.

Last few weeks of living alone until I move in with my gf of almost 3 years. I'm not going to have as much "me" time anymore, but the trade off is that I will be pampered 24/7.

I prefer living alone... sure I could save a decent amount of money each month on rent and utilities, but they might also commandeer my TV when I want it .

Instead of roommates...I upgraded to a girlfriend. I got sex, she cleaned bathrooms, and the laundry was done. Sure I gave up the always available video game buddy and she didn't have the same appreciation for flatulence and beer can houses...but it wasn't a terrible decision.

Seriously though...I'm not somebody that enjoys living alone. I need "alone" time...but like having somebody else around emotionally and financially.

Living alone in a smaller place or a studio should be fairly inexpensive. It's always the other stuff, like location and parking that jacks up costs.

Alone or spouse only... Spouse has to be legit too. I hated living with my last GF... Glad that fiasco is long over.

I love living alone.

It's somewhat bad for me socially, but i simply cannot tolerate people 24/7.

Being able to go home to your own place, even if it's a ghetto apartment or a basement suite, is so worth it to me.

There's been a couple times i've lived w/ roommates, but inevitably, i always have to go back to having my own space.

If you crave being around people all the time, don't do it.

If you're like me & like your space a LOT, it's wonderful.
