Living near school...

My girlfriend and I can either get a 1 bedroom near school for $1510, or a 2 bedroom for $1495 25 minutes away. The 2 bedroom is also a top floor unit. What would Jesus do?

If they're going to school then family should be farthest from their mind. Once they have kids, then they can move to a bigger place.

Figure out whether you want/need 1 or 2 bedrooms. If you're not comfortable sharing a room/bed you should definitely be in the 2 bedroom place, travel distance be damned.

There are a bunch of other things to factor in...

1. Cost of getting to school from farther away (walking/biking vs driving)
2. Value of extra 50 minutes a day
3. Benefit of being able to come home during the day (come home for a break, lunch, etc).

Personally, for me I'd prefer to have a smaller place and actually have time to be home in it. I lived across the street from campus when I was in school and it was really nice to come and go during the day.

I really would like the 2nd bedroom as a man cave. I play music/record, so it sucks not being able to do that when she's working on hw or watching one of her million shows.

We left all of our friends/family to go to school in Los Angeles. We haven't really made many friends here. I don't have the time anyways because I'm either busy with school, work, writing, or recording. Any free time we get is usually spent together.

How much of an increase is 25min? There's a difference between 5min vs 30min and 45min vs 70min.

Personally I'd pick the closer 1bedroom, but I've always put a premium on location. My SO and I have gone from a 3bedroom to a 2 bedroom to a 1 bedroom to a 2 bedroom (current). Currently we don't actually use the 2nd bedroom for anything other than a tv room, there's a futon for when guests come over but that's happened twice in 18months.

Right now we live about 15 minutes from school. It's all service streets so the commute can get up to 20. The location with the 2 bedroom is 90% freeway and will be 25 minutes...possibly 30-35 in traffic. I won't be having any classes during rush hour so I should be ok.
