OP should have bought a Chevy Astro 4WD Van -

Seriously - Everyone of FBB's posts are so far from the norm I can not relate in any way to this guy, his motivations, his decisions, or his lifestyle.

Good luck out there and I hope you are doing what makes you happy in life! Enjoy the ride!

It's pretty much the antithesis of everything I've worked my whole life for. But different folks like different things, that's why they make paint in more than one color.

This is awesome. I approve. If you have a good fast cellphone and unlimited data, or a tablet/netbook and bluetooth keyboard, you basically don't need anything else.

People do this in college, live in minivan park on campus street shower gym and meal plan. Save >$20k.

I recommend a quality styrofoam cooler. You can buy bags of ice for $1.59 and they will last about a day+half. Milk, bananas, yogurt, etc. go in and then few boxes of cereal.

How do you deal with extreme temperature situations? Like really warm nights or really cold nights? Do you just run the car all night?

Really cold is easy - just bundle up. I have two sleeping bags.

Really warm is tough, but at night it never gets so hot that it's unbearable. In park in the shade and in the daytime if there's no building with AC around I'll run the car.

I agree. Cold is easy, especially with nice sleeping bags. But heat is very difficult. I nearly killed myself trying to sleep in my car once in Las Vegas when it hit 110 degrees. I can't begin to imagine how hot it was in the car even though I was parked in the shade and had the windows down. I do remember losing consciousness though from the heat.

I too would love to be able to sleep in my car and I've thought about buying a car solely for that purpose. The Nissan Quest seats actually folds pretty flat and is long enough for me to lay down in. If I could solve the heat and noise problem (I'm a light sleeper), I'd probably do it.

I'd always imagined getting a minivan if I were to live in a car. Much more room in the back, and a lot of them are coming out with AWD capabilities now. As for noise, I'd imagine it wouldn't be too bad soundproofing the interior with dynamat.

Solve the heat problem by staying away from hot regions?

Ford Transit Connect - its the perfect $20K car-camper van.

Might actually get a diesel version when the new model appears for 2014. Maybe 2015/2016 for the diesel.

I'm always worried about the "AWD" capabilities of the other brands. I've seen supposedly AWD SUVs stopped in their tracks due to wet leaves on a cement incline...

I know from personal experience that Subaru AWD is really good. The other AWD systems only seem good for driving in snow on regular roads...

I lived for a week outside of Las Vegas. I camped on the edge of Lake Mead and used that for cooling. Just went in the water. You can take a dip before sleeping and let the evaporative cooling do its thing.

In the daytime in areas without water there is always Starbucks.

If I were to live in a passenger vehicle, it would definitely be something like the Ford Transit without rear windows.

A lot more room in one of those and damn good mileage.

Actually I learned to just stay at the Gold Spike instead of risking my life. $19 on weekdays and $28 on weekends. Plus I got to see the interesting people of downtown LV. I shed a tear when it shut down.

how long are you planning on this setup?

Tinted windows is a MUST for me in this case. I was short on cash while traveling and it didn't exactly make sense as i got to my destination at 2AM and had an appointment at 8AM. So i just opted to sleep in my car in an unknown area.

Tinted windows and no knew/cared in my maxima.

Length is uncertain. A long time, probably.

I'm actually getting my car tinted as we speak. 50% in the fronts, an 80% heat blocking film on the windshield, and 40% in the back on TOP of the factory 20% tint.
