Llano so who is getting it for their Desktop?

I'll be building a mini-ITX Llano desktop for a friend who plays WoW and L4D along with the usual office and web browsing. Should be an ideal solution for him, as it will not use much juice, and obviate the need for a discrete GPU. We're just waiting for availability of parts!

Total system price will be the deciding factor for many. It will be good to see the low-cost & low-power mATX and mITX boards in a few months. AMD A8-based all-in-one computers might sell well, and be able to game as well as look pretty. I'm mostly looking forward to a $700 gaming laptops with a 13.3" screen, and 4+ hours of battery.

Anyone know how an A8 GPU stacks up to a desktop HD4650?

Can the user disable cores of the A8 series?
(Will that lower TDP or increase overclocking/turbo?)

Need more information. But intend to get at least one for an HTPC/light TV gaming/encoding/ripping/file server system.

The A8 seems to be the perfect option. A near 3GHz 4 core, with gaming capability. Put it in a Define Mini, or Silverstone set top box and know that power draw and heat output might actually be less then my PS3. This would make me so happy.

I may use it for a HTPC, but I'll wait until the duals are released.

It depends on the overall system price.

I agree. Looking over E-350 prices cost is going to be a factor. (E-350 is a bit pricey although that is MB+CPU)

It certainly makes a good SFF for me anyways, but if it costs too much I'm willing to lug an old PC that is a bit outdated (C2D/Ph II)

as it stands and my current needs, nope.

might have used it as a download machine but upgraded that from a p3 laptop to a athlon x4 several months back, so not expecting to need to do that for a long while.

depending on price for the lower power versions, I might look at them for a never started project I would like to do (local network cloud storage), but nothing is what I want as a "ready to go" software solution, so that might be another year before that happens.

If a decent quad-core could be had for ~$100, I could easily see myself building a new PC for my parents. It wouldn't be too difficult to build a nice little machine for under $400, especially if I salvage a few parts from the old one.

Depending on the price, it might make a good office machine. $170 for the top-bin kinda makes me sad, though. Esp for ~ 2.9ghz K10(.6)

Yeah, llano laptop? YES big win. Llano desktop? Maybe for HTPC. 2500k is just too awesome of a deal to pass up, at least for gamers. It will last a long time for non-gamers who don't want to upgrade(ever) too.

i'm getting one.

i'm a huge hardware enthusiast, but i know how much i really need. its probably way mroe than twice as fast as my current main rig (an athlon ii 245 with 785G igp).

so its plenty. already bought 8gb of ddr3-1600 of a newegg deal to get reatdy. its $170 for the unlocked top bin, but the non unlocked one was supposed to be $150 and i'm hoping the 2nd bin is only $130 or so (the 3800 that has turbo and 2.4 ghz base clock instead of 2.9ghz all the time...)

I am tempted to build a llano ITX HTPC though I just build a Brazos one, so I'll probably hold off till Trinity if I want to upgrade. Hopefully silverlight 5 will improve netflix when playing back HD programs.

If you haven't build a HTPC, I'd think a 35w llano part would make a pretty damn good HTPC.

I'd be tempted for a mini-ITX HTPC since the Brazos CPU isn't fast enough for software decoding of HD Silverlight (Netflix), and Atom is even worse.

I trust AMD and nvidia to get the video drivers right much more than I do intel, who has had problems with anything except business use since the i810 / 740 days.

I don't think I am. For desktop, if the FX-6110P matches the 2600K in multi-threaded apps, that's what I'll go for. It should be easy if it has the same IPC as Lynnfield. $250 seems like the most I would be willing to pay for a CPU, I think. If the FX-8110 is a good amount faster, maybe I'd be willing to break my budget. The 8130P to me is just a waste of money since all of the CPUs are unlocked and they'll probably OC the same.

Llano just isn't really good for desktops apart for HTPC and low-power builds.

I don't really know about it succeeding on desktop. The desktop GPU portion is slower than the CPU portion; there's a speed disparity. I like the laptop APU more because it's more balanced.

The thing is, OEMs can just put an Athlon II X4 and something like a Radeon HD 6570 for a similar price to what desktop A8 Quad-Core Llano should cost and have the same CPU performance and higher GPU performance. Since we're talking desktops, power consumption isn't as big of a concern.

Basically, its useless for anything other than itx syste,s. Let's face it, k8 is dead, no enthusiast should be a building a new system with one of thoe cpus for general computing.

If it is cheap though, it can have a place. Teintegrated USB 3 on the chipset is really nice. Basically, that makes it good for a media center or for parents.

definitely interested in a quad itx setup here
I'd like to have one as a replacement for my matx c2d server

if I can do this well under 100watts full load will be the determining factor
I just want it small and low power draw

Im not sure, I was a bit disappointing with the gpu performance but I guess that's because I had higher expectations.

I might get one if the price is right! if not then I will wait and see how trinity turns out.

I'm pretty excited about Llano for a SFF HTPC. Brazos would have been my first choice since it'll most likely be cheaper, but the issues with HD Netflix is a problem.

might build an ITX setup around it. Low price, low power consumption and adquate performance are a must.

It is a good thing that it isn't a K8 part but a K10. But there are probably between 10-15 uses that this CPU has a Desktop part that an enthusiast would love to have it in. No Enthusiast who uses benchmark numbers to determine product purchase will purchase it based solely on un-overclocked performance for use in their primary machine. But there are toooooons of things, cheap encoding, cheap folding, htpc, ESXi, and more, including just a plain secondary gaming system for light gaming.
