What did you get? I still vote for the Insignia... The Non-M 3-Series is a boring turd compared to this car.

At least for America, I might put in a dissenting vote for the mid-size stripper. Most Japanese and American companies are still pouring their best engineering efforts and best build quality into the mid-size segment. I'll trade blind-spot monitoring for a chassis that is instantly recognizable as stiffer by the first pothole and for a drivetrain built for 300,000 hard miles. Couple that with the fact that many mid-sizers are matching or beating the mileage of their compact comparisons. x2 when looking at subcompacts. If they got 10 more MPG, it might be a different story, but if they aren't cheaper to operate, what's the point of going smaller outside of a major urban city?

I tend to agree. Even a mid-size "stripper" is well equipped these days with a decent stereo, power windows and locks, AC (often climate control), the usual tech ports, etc...

Yeah, that's true, but you will be stuck with the base engine too, and on the autobahn having some legs is helpful.

Anyway, I think I'll pop the question to management, but might end up "inheriting" the car (an Insignia Touring will be "freed up by the end of the year") from one of the guys leaving the company, who just got new cars.... again.

On the other hand, getting a new lease should be financially less of a hit than losing the income I generate right now... On the other hand, if they think I'm too keen on quitting, they'll also be reluctant in giving me a car.

I still haven't gotten around to doing any test drives, but if I manage to get out of bed tomorrow morning, I'll take a look at the Leon, Giulietta, Megane and 508, and maybe a slow-ish Mondeo or V40.
