I have to admit I am tempted but after several nightmarish experiences with Dell's so called "support" I have to pass :/

Last one was 3 weeks ago. I ran their diagnostic tool and it gave me an error code and told me the video card's memory was bad. After spending over 1.5 hours on the phone with them, their solution was for me to reformat and reinstall windows :roll:

That would probably be decently better than my HP6500t that I got in September for $1250. Sigh* I hate how fast technology moves sometimes.. But then again it keeps the world moving.

This comes with XPS support - supposedly techs, "specialized" on these machines, and likely US based

My brother is looking for a good laptop deal but he wants to be able to play modern games at 1280x800 or 1440x900. This laptop would be right up his alley, except you can't upgrade it to an 8600GT.

Well, by my calculation, more than $400 more ($1479, and that gets you a 250GB disk rather than 320GB and a Dell 802.11g card vs an Intel a/g card - those upgrades weren't choices for the custom machine) to get a machine that is identical to the OP's machine except with the 1440x90 LCD and the 256MB 8600M. Even if you ignore that the preconfig has a better disk and wireless card, Dell shows only a $150 difference for those 2 upgrades. However, the preconfig also has $220 more in instant savings, and that _still_ leaves some money missing...

Another intersting upgrade would be the 64GB solid state disk - usuallythat upgrade is around $1000, but here it is "only" $700 - Even at $1756 this would probably be by far the cheapest performance notebook with SS HDD
